Re: Piston problem

Hi Luli, I agree not the best way forward and I’m not suggesting it is, only that it might be possible if necessary. It really depends what facilities are available. For some classic car owners a complete and very expensive engine rebuild may represent a terminal condition, resulting in the car bein...

Re: Piston problem

John/Luli, I know that pre War cars had white metalled end bearings but I thought I read somewhere that, post War, the big ends were shell bearings. If that is the case it might be possible to renew them with the engine in situ, assuming the crank is ok. Regardless, if the crank is ok and the other ...

Re: new member

Rob, They look bright. Where did you get the LEDs from? I need new bulbs for the semaphores on my Tourer so may as well get some for those. Were they a direct replacement? Re the wiring to your semaphores; if you can find the end under the rear seat or wherever it heads off behind the side trim and ...

Re: new member

Rob, You would need to be going very slow to justify using hazard lights. I guess there are a lot of steep hills in your part of the West Country? I took my Tourer up the Brooklands test hill last year, which must be at best 1:4 but maybe steeper. I kept it in first as I didn’t want to crunch into s...

Re: Piston problem

John,

I’m in Colchester, Essex, near the border with Suffolk.

Sounds as though the odd piston just fits differently but, given it’s been in and working fine, not something to worry about.

Keep us updated.

Tony.

Re: new member

Hi and welcome aboard. I’m sure that club members will try to help answer your questions where possible. I have a 12 Saloon that is in the final quartile of restoration. Great old cars and certainly worth the effort! To answer your question ‘to paint or not to paint’, that is really a matter of pers...

Re: Piston problem

John, There is no denying that you have uncovered a serious issue. They key thing is that you have found it before anything too disastrous has occurred. Luli is right that you will most likely have to remove the engine for a strip down, inspection and remedial work. However, before doing that, I’d s...

Re: P2 Stepboard valance colour

Hi Rob, It will be good to see your car once you have it ship shape with new boards etc. Back in 70s as I recall, with regard to my Tourer when my Father owned it, old Rovers - even soft tops - were not regarded as much more than quaint old bangers. As such, the value was low and parts supply quite ...

Re: P2 Stepboard valance colour

Hi Rob, When I did the running boards on my P2 i found that the side edge piece had been replaced with a parallel section about 20mm deep and the whole thing covered in rubber. It looked a bit clumsy and had to be sorted. However, as far as I could deduce from looking at pictures of other cars, the ...
