On my P3 I found quite some casting sand collected at the base of the cylinder waterways - not the hottest part of the engine - once the side covers were removed.
I dug this out with a knife blade IIRC.

The P3 by-pass filter continuously filters part of the oil stream - but to a finer particle size. - Whereas a full flow filter tends to filter to larger particle size: and later shell bearings don't have the ability to 'absorb' circulating hard pieces of swarf like white metal... Often the P3 overheating /cooling issue is due to the alloy elbow return at the bottom corner becoming corroded and furred up. - this might be reducing the return flow ... and reducing flow through the radiator matrix.
