Re: Piston problem

Hello, I removed the number 1 piston connecting rod cap yesterday (planning to remove the rod itself later) and the crankshaft journal has some scoring (see photo). My idea was remove all the pistons and also take a look at main bearings before deciding on the next step. Woking conditions are not id...

Re: Piston problem

Thanks Luli. Well, it will be an interesting challenge. And, as you say, a good chance to make sure everything else is OK.

Re: Piston problem

Hello, Further to previous posts, on removing the sump I found that it contained a lot of white metal fragments, which I assume are the remains of the bearings from number 1 connecting rod. There is a lot of movement both at the big and and the small end. I wasn't able to take the piston out yet bec...

Re: Piston problem

Hi Tony,

I'm in south London, so not so far away. Will post an update once I've had the chance to take a look at that piston.

John

Re: Piston problem

Hello Tony, Thank you very much for taking the trouble to post such a thorough explanation and advice about what to do next. It certainly makes me more confident about tackling the job and will definitely bear all the points you made in mind as I proceed. Whereabouts are you, just in case I needed t...

Re: Piston problem

Hello Mike, Thank you your very much for your guidance about piston removal. it's a big help towards understanding what to do. I decided to decoke because compression was poor and based on what I know of the car's history I suspected it probably hadn't been done for some time, which looked to be the...

Piston problem

I recently removed the cylinder head from my 1946 Rover 12 to carry out a de-coke. I have discovered that the number 1 piston appears to be loose. There is slight circular movement (probably less than 1mm) about the axis of the piston. There is also vertical movement (maybe a couple of mm) if I turn...

Re: Thermoflex seal

Hello Tony and Mike, Thank you for your messages and apologies for the late reply — I was on holiday and didn't have access to the internet. The problem with my seal is that the carbon part is damaged around the outer edges and I'm not sure that it's fit for purpose any more. I thought that it would...

Re: Thermoflex seal

Yes. Nothing doing unfortunately. The seals are no longer being made.
