Re: 1947 12hp

Len, I should think you need to heat all around the head where the gasket is, the aim being to loosen the sealer and get a bit of movement from the expansion. Too much heat in just one place may cause distortion, although unlikely as the cast iron will dissipate the heat well. Suggest you apply most...

Re: 1947 12hp

Mike, Just thinking about your suggestion; given that rockers etc all removed so valves all closed, would the pistons create any pressure within the combustion chambers? Just a thought! Len, your idea of using metal plates and the studs may work but the risk of stripping threads is to be considered, ...

Re: Cross Ply tyres Vs Radial Ply tyres

Luli, Great pictures of your car! I’ve been hunting for radial tyres to fit my Tourer. Some like yours would be fine but I cannot find any for my 18” rims. Currently I have 550x18 Blockleys, which are hardly worn but they are just a bit too wide and can rub the inner arches on the rear if cornering ...

Re: Cross Ply tyres Vs Radial Ply tyres

Hi, Fitting these radials is an interesting idea. They don’t have a lot of tread but, for low usage cars, that hardly matters. The rims on old cars probably can’t support going tubeless (my wire wheels certainly won’t). How will you get on putting tubes into the tubeless tyres? Also, some of the spa...

Re: 1947 12hp

Len, I’d advise against levering on the water outlet studs at the rear of the head. These studs can be weakened by water seepage and breaking one will give you a lot of trouble as they are tapped into the iron head, which is relatively soft compared to the stud so hard to drill out and re-tap. Best ...

Re: 1947 rover

Len, The Workshop Manual details setting up the valve timing when changing the chain or rebuilding etc. As such, checking the valve timing would be the same procedure. Basically, turn engine in normal directing until the flywheel pointer is on the EP mark. At this point the No1 exhaust valve should ...

Re: 1947 rover

Hi Len, The head bolts are 5/16W and the timing chain cover bolts are 1/4W. I don’t know what the bottom pulley/ starting handle dog size is, but it’s big! There are only two sprockets; one on the crank and one on the cam. You need to get an up to date workshop manual to set up the valve timing with...

Re: Bijur bits David Moseley's advert in Freewheel

I’d like to echo Luli’s sentiments. It’s very sad that David is no longer with us. When I was restoring my Tourer six years ago, I learned through the club that his car, COA 550, resided about 25 miles from me and he kindly invited me to look and take as many pictures as I wanted to help me rebuild ...

Re: 1947 rover

Len,

The earlier cars had a 5 thou tappet clearance, although this was often updated to 10 thou when the cam was changed. I believe the cam came with a red plate for the rocker box to replace the original. Your older 12 was probably 5 thou.

Re: P2 body upholstery

Hi Rob, I don’t know if it is of any help, but my 12 Tourer originally had carpet sections on the lower part of the front seat backs. The edges were ‘whipped’ with a matching coloured thread. The under edges around the seat were also covered in carpet. The lower door sections were covered in carpet ...
