Re: 1934 Rover 12 TICK OVER
Hi Len, The erratic tick over you have described suggests a carburettor issue. On an SU the throttle operates a butterfly, allowing in more air. The draw of air creates a vacuum within the carb that moves the slider and needle, letting in more fuel. At least, that is my understanding. On an old carb...

Re: oil for differential
Hi Bob, My pre War cars are supposed to have SAE 30 in the engine, SAE40 in the gearbox and either SAE40 or 50 in the back axle. So, I’m assuming your car is the same. The key thing is to use Classic oils rather than modern ones, which contain additives that might attack the yellow metals used in ou...

Re: Rover 12 clutch and flywheel
John, Meteor Spares provided me with an exchange reconditioned cover and plate. Give Mike a call to see what he can do to help you. Worth changing the release bearing and check the oil ways on the gearbox input shaft which lubricate it. I think that is covered off in the RSR workshop manual. Your fl...

Re: 1934 Rover 12 ignition
Len, I installed my alternator when I re wired the car so the new loom was made accordingly. As such, I just chopped the relays out of the regulator box and used the fuses. I’m pretty sure Accuspark provide a wiring diagram for fitting in place of a dynamo. The regulator shouldn’t be polarity consci...

Re: 1934 Rover 12 ignition
Hi Len, The points gap, from memory, is about 12 thou. It should be possible to set this regardless of any wear on the four cam lobes. The problem would be that the points fail to close if the lobes were worn away, as if the points were running on a round shaft. I’ve never seen a distributor worn to...

Re: Rover 12 engine removal
Hi John, Well done, sounds like a bit of a job but what a great achievement to get the engine out. As I said before, there are some advantages in removing the engine and box together and, I suspect, you may well have identified a few. It may be that you decide to remove the box after all and install...

Re: P3 Gearbox Mount
Ray,
Assume the P3 has a rubber block similar to P1/2 and these are available from Meteor Spares. Over time the block bonds itself to the aluminium mounting but the replacement rubber just pushes into place.
Tony.

Re: 1934 Rover 12 headlight bulbs
Rob, My Tourer has headlights wired like yours with the two main lamps being the main beam and the one underneath the dip. I always remember them being that way as a child and left them like that when I restored the car. The main beam isn’t too bad but the single dip is pretty poor. The worrying bit...

Re: Newly signed in
David, As the owner of a pre War Tourer I frequently look out for similar cars for sale and, it’s fair to say, they rarely come up. When they do it’s usually a restoration opportunity, hugely overpriced or both! Post War cars are becoming just as rare and, as I’m sure you will discover, most of the ...

Re: 1934 Rover 12 Radiator problems
Len, These Rovers have a fairly unique thermostat that I haven’t seen for sale through regular suppliers. The diameter of the housing will allow you to fit a standard sized stat but this won’t shut off the appropriate outlets and operate correctly. Mike Couldry at Meteor supplied mine some years ago...
