1934 Rover 12Steering

Good morning Iv`e just refitted the steering box and column after having them rebuilt.There is a tube runs down the centre of the column,to take the horn and dip switch wires.The control holding the horn and switch is held onto the tube by tightening a small bolt,but when the control is pushed onto the tube its not possible to get to the bolt.Can the tube be raised up while this bolt is tightened and then pushed back,I can`t move it at the moment

Thanks ,but the photo shows a bush on the shaft and I cant tell if the bush is fixed,I think its a case of removing bottom section which holds the tube and looking Len

Again mine is a later model than yours but I found that in order to move the conduit freely I had to slacken off the clamp at the bottom of the electrical conduit where the wires emerge. I seem to remember also that this allowed steering box oil to leak out if you moved the conduit up and down too vigorously!

Hi Len,

I seem to remember that it’s possible to dismantle the horn assembly to fit the clamp to the top of the tube and then reassemble. You will need to do this anyway to replace the wires. Alternatively, you may be able to remove the advance/retard clamp to release the tube and allow upward movement. The tube has to turn freely so that it can operate the advance mechanism and so that it doesn’t turn with the steering wheel, thereby keeping the dip switch in the right place and stopping the wires from getting twisted and broken. Unless you have wired in relays the wires to the dip switch should be similar heavy gauge to the headlamps and the horn is quite substantial too so it’s a squeeze in the tube.

How did you get the horn off before the steering box was repaired?

Just had another look and as you say I can dismantle the horn ass.fix it onto the tube and reassemble Thanks again .The car is getting nearer to being finished,but with the present lockdown ,there is no rush.I can`t see any car shows for most of this year,so time is on our hands The steering finally went back in ,one slight panic when I found the top bracket did`t line up yo the fixing holes.For some reason I thought it was welded onto the shaft,but then found I could tap it up the column slightly.Len

Hello,when I received the steering box and column back from the restorers I was told the tube connecting the grease nipple on top of the box ,to the tube on the underside of the box,which feeds the taper joint on the drop arm had been removed.This left no way,to grease the ball joint connected to the taper .So I1ve fitted a grease nipple straight onto the drop arm where the tube entered it.Now when I apply grease to the nipple it can be seen coming out of the ball joint.One less worry now to fit a split pin through the nut.
