Hi,
About to purchase 4 new cross ply tyres for my '46 10 saloon. Was wondering if anyone has a verdict or experience with the "Excelsior" brand? also has anyone tried to source or indeed fitted a radial equivalent? my tyres are 4.75 x 17"

17X475 is a very rare size, and Rover 10 spans most of the market. The demand is very small and the batches are accordingly small, and do not occure every year. Right now Excelsior is the only one evailable. I have just got 4 of them for my 1947 LHD 10 which is under restoration http://wp.me/pXLKy-JM, so no experience yet.
In my other 10, a 1946 RHD, I have 4 17X450-500 Michlens. They are 11 years old now and still as good as new. The spare was made by Zambia's Dunlop branch, and sold to me by http://www.vintagetyres.com/. There are no radial tyres with 17 inch rim, and because of the size of the 12" brake drums, it is very hard to fit even 16" rims on them (see the above link).

luli

Hi Luli,
Thanks very much for your reply. So I think my only option is to go with the excelsior brand.Where are you based?

I have found Excelsiors to be a satisfactory cross ply tyre in use on my Kitcher special which was built from a 1946 10 saloon. Incidentally, they are available from a number of sources in the UK, and you will more than save your subscription for joining the RSR by being able to use the club discount (RSR members only) with North Hants Tyres

Hope that this helps
