P2 and P3 gearboxes

Post by achandler » Sat Nov 23, 2013 1:19 am

Can anyone advise whether it is possible to fit a P3 gearbox satisfactorily to a 1947 Rover 12 engine?
The New Zealand Rover Club I belong to, has just inherited a very original 1947 Rover 12. The engine is really sweet and the gearbox is good except that although we can select 4th gear, there is no drive. All the other gears are good. We do have a P3 75 gearbox which was overhauled some years ago, but never fitted and wonder whether that might be a solution.
All suggestions would be very welcome.

While sharing many components - these gearboxes are not interchangeable because of "interface" issues. You may be able to cannibalize the 75 gearbox and use its components to fix the 12 gearbox - but is'nt it a shame to lose a good gearbox?
I think a better idea would be to strip down the faulty gearbox, find what's wrong and fix it. Alternativly, find a good 10/12 gearbox - they do exist.
I have recently converted a broken 1947 16hp gearbox to 10/12 gearbox (even these are not interchangeable). The work is described in 16 chapters starting here: http://wp.me/pXLKy-1JX, and you are invited to watch the pictures (which tell most of the story).
