1939 14 Horn Push and Dip Switch Wiring

I need to access the horn push and dip switch electrical connections in the steering wheel centre boss. The dip switch does not seem to work. How do I get to the connections? Does the central boss withdraw from the steering wheel? Or do I need to take the steering wheel off?
If I need to take the steering wheel off, how do I do that? I can see a clamp bolt and nut and a cast metal bearing cover...
Many thanks in advance for any help.
Colin.

At the bottom of the steering box you will see a loom coming out. Originally it was connected by "bullets" to the main loom. Disconnect and loosen the lock ( 1/4 nut). Now you can pull out the control tube for service. You may need to open the sunshine roof for that or make a similar manoeuvre since the tube is very long. It is also oily so be ready to wipe it as it comes out. For pictures and some explanations see here: http://wp.me/pXLKy-136 and here: http://wp.me/pXLKy-13p and also here http://wp.me/pXLKy-1Yn

Great thanks for that. I'll go and put some WD40 on that nut at the end of the column!

I have removed the clamp at the end of the tube but the tube will not move! I think I'll need to cut the wires off close to the end of the tube and tap with a hammer upwards towards the steering wheel. Is there anything else I've missed? The tube seems to be held in some sort of bush at the end - I can see a very slight lateral movement if I push the tube sideways...

It will be a little tight but should pull straight out. It is possible the last person who removed it overtightened the clamp which doesn't help

Okay all done. I had to prise away a rubber bush sitting between the clamp block and the triangular end plate of the steering box. Then the shaft was free. My dip switch was working intermittently so I adjusted the piece that makes the electrical contact and re-assembled. Thanks for the help.
