p2 reverse gear

Post by Vince » Thu Feb 12, 2015 7:02 pm

Hi folks.
Just got the engine and box back in my 37 rover 12 and no matter how I adjust the gear selector I can't get it to stay in reverse.
All other gears select well.
The detent ball and spring seem fine.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Will it drive backwards if you hold it in reverse?

The car isn't driveable yet but reverse does seem to engage when the lever is held.
Will have a look tomorrow to see if the output flange turns when the engine is turned.

Have you seen the gearbox gremlins post below? That might give some clues

Best regards

Observe the following picture: Image
(right click and select 'view image' to fit it to your screen).
Open the gate cover (#66). #51 is the reverse selector. Put the gear lever in neutral, and using a long screw driver push #51 backwards. If you hear a click and it is locked than the gear lever adjustment is in-correct – not reaching far enough. Probably The change speed gate assembly (#20 in the next picture) is not in the right position. Note that its position can be adjusted.

If it goes all the way and does not lock the spring 49 (in the first picture) may be weak.

Thanks for the replies.
Had another look tonight and it was the plate beneath the gear stick. Adjusted it rearward and it is now working.
Thanks again
