Matt,

The sets I referred to in earlier post were pistons and rings, rather than just rings. Apologies for not making that clear.

Tony.

You can fit rings to your cylinders, provided that their diameter is a little larger than the cylinder diameter. See here https://tinyurl.com/yxeoys2g

Matt,

Just looked on eBay and there are two new sets for sale; a standard size set @£140 and a 60thou oversize set for £58. Both sets shown as new old stock.

You should be able to see size of existing pistons once head is off and you can make out writing on piston crowns. However, it would certainly be worth buying the oversize ones anyway.

Tony
Thanks Tony, I'd looked on eBay but could only see the oversized set so until I get the head off, I can't tell what is what but you're right, they are worth having for that price anyway!

I hadn't seen the standard set as I'd been searching for "Rover Fourteen" rather than "Rover 14" which is why I didn't spot it as I found searching for the former, you'd get a million listings for Rover 1.4 parts but I've now found them and asked the vendor to confirm they will fit my 1935/6 car, as their listing states for 1937/8 and as I am not sure if there was a change which means the part would not service the earlier car like mine, I thought it best to check first.

Thanks again, much appreciated - I can feel a new set of pistons coming on, not just the rings! :D

Blue Diamond are Riley specialists. There is a firm in Maryport that can make piston rings,Clupet Piston Ring & Gauge Co, Solway Trading Estate, Maryport CA15 8NF Phone: 01900 818361

Regards
Mike
Hi Mike,

Yes, I understand they specialise in Riley however they have come highly recommended by a friend for anything pre-war to put a new set of pistons/rings in my engine so I'm sure they'll do a great job!

Thank you for the info on Clupet in Maryport, I'll bear them in mind if the pistons I've just bought don't work out.

Thanks again
Matt

The plot thickens!

The guys at Blue Diamond have noted that when each piston is at TDC, the inlet valves are open (hence almost no compression) so it seems the timing is well out as it's trying to exhaust via the inlet!

Front cover off and timing chain is tight so trying to work out if the engine has been run previously with the dynamo slackened off thus altering the timing.

Watch this space!!
