The N/s half shaft seal was leaking badly, so as the wing was off for re-painting (actually they are all off!) it was an opportune moment to take out the shaft. The six bolts all came undone ok, the brake ros disconnected (nice bit of engineering that clevis pin ...screw in and with an anti-rattle spring...not seen that before!). and the shaft pulled out - with a bit of help from a slide hammer!
Now to remove the seal. Poke the seal to reduce the "stiction". Thump the spline end firmly on a solid bit of wood and the seal and carrier will come loose and dropdown from the housing says the workshop manual!
In my dreams!
No sign of movement. so off to a local Landrover expert. He recognised the shaft assembly and attacked the old seal/housing. It did not give up without a fight! I think it was the original metal cased leather seal! Anyway it came out & the housing looked good, no ridges nor wear. The new modern seal went in with a bit of help from a traditional brass drift. It is now snug in the housing. Fortunately the bearing is fine. The bearing does not appear to have any provision for lubrication....Is there?

The bearing is sealed for life. However this is a major operation that is done once in many years, therefor I always take the opportunity to replace the bearing. To take apart and reassemble I use 20 + ton press. See more here:
