Ive always done the valves like that The exhaust valves will not fit into their guides now they`re out.but it took some force to remove them .So I think new valves and a good clean of the guides is in order

If it were my car I would be fitting new valve guides along with hardened valve seats

Sound thinking and maybe Len would too. However, it’s not his car and, given the minimal usage his friend’s car gets, it won’t make any difference. The important thing is that this car will be returned to the road. Changing the guides, seats and valves at a later date is something I’m sure the owner will consider and the only additional cost over doing it now is a head gasket.

Well done Len, let us know when you have the old girl running again.

Tony.

Hello I always grind the valves in using a drill, far more effective then using a plunger . I need 4 exhaust valves for my friends car, since these were the ones tending to seize when the head got hot I`ve cleaned all the waterways out now thankfully, the entrance holes were quite blocked .Have to do the block next
I have a problem with the exhaust valves ,the new ones Ive been told are
Head dia 32.14 mm dia
Stem dia 7.17 mm dia
Total length 111.12 mm.
However the valves Ive removed after cleaning the heads ,measure 35.1 mm dia the other measurements are the same as the new valves I cant understand why the difference in head size Len
HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL

I agree with the use of a drill ,far better .I need to replace the exhaust valves on my friends car butthe new ones Ive been told are 32.4 mm across the head ,whereas the ones out of the car are 35.1 mm dia The rest of the measurements are fine Anyone know why there is such a difference Ive been told there is only the one size for these Rovers .Len

What you have are oversize stem valves, made to save guide replacement. Now is your opportunity to switch to brass guides, SS exhaust valves and harden valve seats - 4 each. You can get them from meteor spares and they are reasonably priced. It will make the car unleaded petrol compatible and raise its value.
