Does anyone know of a suitable starter ring to recondition an otherwise perfectly good flywheel? Is there a Land Rover series ring that will do the job?

Usually even a starter ring that looks very bad would start the engine perfectly. If you like you can turn the disk 180 deg and ignore (or remark) the marks on it.

You cannot buy the ring gear on its own as they were machined from a sold steel blank. I have been trying to find one for my 12hp but no luck so far. What model is your car? I have a 6 cyl post war P2 flywheel I bought in error that has an excellent face and teeth. Mike Evans said you can machine the teeth off then he can supply a shrink on ring gear but my local engineer wouldn't do it, he said it would shake his lathe to pieces.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the trouble to reply, much appreciated. My car is a 1946 14 so if there is a good flywheel available then I would be interested although I thought that the 6 cylinder flywheel also fits the 4 cyl engine albeit with different EP and firing point markings.

I have machined a flywheel before to fit a starter ring and it didn't shake the lathe to pieces, the main problem was measuring the machined diameter. Heating the ring to 200 deg C in the oven with the flywheel in the freezer and the new ring just dropped on. That was for an Austin Seven. I am quite prepared to have another go with the Rover.

I have now had a chance to take some pictures. 4 cyl & 6 cyl flywheels are different. The recess in the middle to take the crankshaft is smaller for 6 cyl. I have shown as much information as I can below. Although it has some surface rust you can see the face is not scored and the teeth have no damage. It almost looks as though its never been fitted but I have no evidence to support that. I just wish it fitted my 12 hp. If its of interest send me a message and we can discuss a price.
