I have a 1957 75 , and I don't think the free wheel works. The wheel turns ok, but I don't even know what to expect. Is there a cable that operates it and can it be seen underneath? is it worth even using?

The cable can be seen - they do sometimes seize from lack of use. It's easy to check if it works as on the overrun when FREE there will be no engine braking and you can change gear up or down without pressing the clutch.

I think they are great and use the one on our P2 all the time - except down steep hills

Your brakes need to be in good order

thanks, the previous owner never used it. Do you engage stationary or when moving? I see the point about brakes, engine braking could be really useful in mountainous Wales.

You engage it when stationary = FiXED

Or when the engine is pulling - both engage or disengage. The reason is that when pulling both parts of the freewheel are stationary relative to each other.

Thanks, but I still can't get it to work. I will try to crawl under and look at the cable.

I have fixed it, there is an adjusting nut behind the wheel mount, screw out until hardly any play. works beautifully now.

well, it is a weird feeling and like nothing ever I experienced before, it will take some getting used to. The brakes get a real workout and round here , it is all hills.

Put an Overdrive on it. I had a 50 P4 , with a P3 box (floor change), home made cover, and a Laycock overdrive fitted. Absolutely superb! Also a 90 grille!
