Rover P1 [P2?]
Rover P1 [P2?]
My 1936 Rover 12 has chassis number 612954. The RSR Workshop Manual for 1934-47 'P2' models shows that the last chassis number for the 1936 model is 612955. The 37 'model' has a new body style .
Does the Rover 12 with chassis number 612955 still survive or is my car the last of the old style [P1] ?
As an aside, I realise the P numbers refer to 'post' war and that pre P3 the others are more recent interpretations but I feel there is such a marked difference in appearance between the1934-36 Rover 12 and the 37-47 version that 34-36 should be P1 and 37-47 P2

Hi, others with access to the club data will be able to confirm but I suspect you will have the last of the early styler cars.
As for the P1/P2 debate, the club decided many years ago to adopt the P2 designation for all cars built from the re-design for the 1934 model year up to the P3. However this was not a Rover designation and I have always had a problem with this. However, this is just my own opinion and I realise it is totally out of step with the vast majority of the club. We are not even certain what the 'P' stands for, was it Project or Post-war or something else altogether?

This has been rattling on for years. The put a distinction of P1 34-36 etc works on the 12, but dose'nt on the 10...!
I always used to follow the 1934 - 47 P2 debate, but I now refer to my 10hps ( 34 & 35 ) as P1 and my 10 ( 38 ) as a P2.

I have had my 12 for just over 2 years ,joining RSR at the same time. It is RD 8581, first registered on 21 August 1936 in Reading [as Chris Dancey will know]

As your car started life in Reading, it possibly was sold by T.Baker & Sons, 35 & 36 Friar Street who were the Main Rover agents. I have two receipts from them ( Snowdrops purchase ) and many years past ( probably the early 1980s ) I had the pleasure of speaking to the manager of Bakers in the '30s who then was in his 90s and could remember Snowdrop being brought in for service. I was given his details by the owner of the site ( and Bakers landlord ) who had kept in touch.

Thank you for the information. The first registered keeper was Harrison Matthews Ltd, Hambleden Mill, Mill End, Henley on Thames. I believe I have a list of all keepers and I am number 6. When the car moved to keeper 3 in 1989, the Registration Document shows 'not licenced' as does the V5 on the move to keeper 4 in 1995. Keeper 5 had the car for only about one year but he seems to have completed the restoration and put the car through its first MOT in 2011

Chassis no 612955 has never been in the RSR, but who knows it may be lurking around somewhere out there!!! so according to the RSR pre 1950 database chassis no 612954 is currently the last known 1936 Rover 12.
As already mentioned by others there has been contention for many years over the definition of P1 and P2 and no doubt it will continue, but a general guide that seems to have been accepted by many RSR members is that P1 saloons and sports saloons have the 'D' back with no boot and the P2 saloons and sports saloons have a boot with the spare wheel shape in the boot lid. As far as I know, and I was assured on this point some years ago when I was the Pre 1950 Registrar by our late President Tony Holder, the description P1 was never used The Rover Company !!!.

Thank you for responding with very interesting information. As you say, 612955 may be 'lurking' out there and I will be interested to know if anyone ever comes upon it.
On the P1/P2 issue, I realise that these were never used by the Rover Company and are more recent 'interpretations' working back from P3, but they are now used widely .
Using your definition, my car has a 'D' back, no boot and is therefore a P1

Also the 10 coupe 1938 which is a P2, dosen't in fact have the spare wheel impression in the boot lid, the spare wheel is in the boot but set back against the slab petrol tank, the space in front of the spare wheel is just the right dimentions for a doctors call out case...probably only a coincidence, but a nice ' extra ' . The boot lid is flat.
