P2 Semaphore trafficators

Post by MichaelKeay » Wed Jan 03, 2018 9:15 pm

My P2 trafficators are broken and previous owner just glued them in. I’m nearly complete on the full restoration that I took over. I would appreciate some advice and / or guidance of obtaining fully working replacements, what’s involved etc. Wiring is not my strength I use an auto electrician. I have read with some interest to earlier posts last year 2017 re trafficators. Is it worth going the effort to restore this part of the car workings.

Thanks

Hi Mike, Happy New Year.
Do you intend to use them as indicators? Are they legal for road use in NZ? Trafficators/ semaphores are still legal in the UK, however most sensible users fit and use flashing indicators as well as the "funny yellow stick" rather than risk a modern car driver colliding with a classic car. Try Meteor Spares in the UK for spares/reconditioned units (meteorss@hotmail.com).

Flashing festoon bulbs (the torpedo shaped ones) were available in the UK in the early 60's and converted the semaphore into a "modern flashing indicator". One enterprising supplier in the UK has reintroduced them, albeit they are LEDs and the flash is electronically actuated rather than a bi metal strip making and breaking a connection.

Hope this helps

Mike

Many thanks Mike. Semaphores are not legal in NZ on their own, however provided your vehicle has what we call Right and left front and rear turn indicators or “Blinkers” they are permitted as an “xtra” for authentication purposes provided they were an original item on a period vehicle.

I’ll give Mike at Meteors a call. I’m expecting to receive a parcel from him for items I’ve ordered any day now.

I have fitted orange bulbs to the front sidelights and the rear white reverse light lenses. Conversion kits are available to have both in the front sidelights now. Through a system of relays, I have retained the trafficators.

It would be foolhardy and dangerous to use semaphore indicators only on roads round here even though few modern car "drivers" bother to use their indicators anyway
