Hand tools P2 etc
Hand tools P2 etc
There is quite a lot of information on this site, but I have a basic question.
In the tool list in the workshop manual there are spanners 3/16x1/4 (2705): 5/16x 7/16 (2706) (both open end) and 3/8 single end (2712).
There is also a mysterious box spanner (52485) size unspecified! as well a a plug spanner & the freewheel adjusting spanner.
What are these spanners' sizes? BSF or BSW!
Okay; 5/16BSF is the same as 1/4BSW etc, but what should the spanners be? There is quite a difference! On the P2 most threads seem to be BSF, with BSW when a coarse thread is better suited, but what spanners should be in the tool tray....My instinct suggests the "lead" size should be BSF, but what do I know what Rover were thinking!

Re: Hand tools P2 etc
In the general notes at the front of the parts book it states that the sizes of nuts and bolts are BSF unless otherwise stated. I was about to assume that the same applies to the spanners in the tool kit. However, I went and had a look at the tools in my car. These are almost certainly not original to the car, but they do look the part.
The 2 double-ended spanners are marked as BSF only - 1/4 x 5/16 and 3/8 x 1/2. The single-ended one is dual marked 3/8BSW & 7/16BSF. Taking the BSW equivalents gives 3/16 x 1/4, 5/16 x 7/16 and 3/8 - which is what the parts list says. So much for making assumptions!
I've no idea about the mystery box spanner - there doesn't appear to be a space for it in my tool tray.

Re: Hand tools P2 etc
Sounds logical…
“Someone” will surely know about the tubular one!
I think they were mostly made by Snail, but I think Superslim also were used, but I may be mistaken

Re: Hand tools P2 etc
I thought I had better look and see what tubular spanner I had in my tool kit. Unfortunately it turns out to a double ended one made in Japan for Draper! (7/16"AF x 3/8" AF) And it is part of a 4 piece set which I can't remember acquiring. I suspect the original would have been a bit larger to fill the space provided. Was it in fact a plug spanner?
Sorry I cannot help

Re: Hand tools P2 etc
A plug spanner is listed separately, but it does seem logical…however a long tubular plug spanner is not suitable for removing plug no 4 as it catches on stuff on the bulkhead on my car! Ref. Manufacturers, my post isa bit misleading in that Snail etc I think only made/ branded the open end spanners…or not?

Re: Hand tools P2 etc
I now have a complete tool tray, thanks to the bay of E! Two are even correctly branded.
This car came with two jacks…one with a handle to wind it up/down,, the other uses the (sloppy fit) wheelbrace
Anyone know which is correct for 1947? I imagine it is the wheelbrace version.

Re: Hand tools P2 etc
Following up on my query about P2 jacks. Looking through old posts it may be that the post war 10hp cars had the hexnut type (operated by the wheelbrace?)and the bigger cars the wind up side handle type.
Now where was the Jack, wheelbrace and tyre pump and starting handle stored in the tourer? The oblong toolbox in the boot is the obvious place, but were they in clips or simply laid in the felt lined toolbox (as found in my pretty original tourer)? Not very Roverish
Any ideas (or knowledge!)
The door sidescreeens fit in the space between the tool box and the back seat.. the mysterious quite large holes do more or less fit the widescreen pegs and rather than jam the rear sidescreens in this space (they will go with a bit of jiggling) the space under the front seat squabs is better. The mystery straps under the front seats remain a mystery though!

Re: Hand tools P2 etc
Dear David,
I hadn't noticed this so my apologies for being late to the party. Rather than witter too much, I am enclosing some photos ( not intended to be examples of what's right or should be) but the bits I should write are :
1) I only have one tray with the small box spanner in it and it is 3/16W. I have been half looking for more but with no size or makers name on it, they may be a bit hard to track down.
2) Snail Brand was, to the best of my knowledge, the only firm that supplied spanners. Later Snail Brand spanners, and those of some other makes, don't have the jaws set at an angle which match the recesses.
3) I believe that the Snail Brand spanners with just one size marked on each end were correct for 1946 as these came with a one father/daughter owned car and were more likely to have been original to the car. The sequence seems to be : dual markings (BSF/BSW)pre war, single markings early post war, straight jaws and text SNAIL BRAND, late 40s early 50s.
4) Correct screwdrivers (with decent tips) are difficult to find ! The handles should have flat sides, not all rounded and they are not the "Perfect" pattern screwdrivers made by Clay.
5) The pliers are by TW, who made Superslim
6) I have included a picture of a P1 toolkit which preceded the under dash tray. Spanners marked "Rover" (not shown in these pictures) look to be older than 1934 as they are a different size to the spaces.
7) You might find this website:
https://www.classic-british-car-jacks.uk/
of interest. The 14s and 16s just pre and post war had a hydraulic jack and the 10s and 12s had the wind up ones. The 1939 handbook says to wind up the jack "with the handle provided" . I have just read in James Taylor's "Rover cars of the 1930s" that the Stevenson jack, in 1937-40, was raised by using a box spanner or the wheelbrace. Whether this continued postwar it doesn't say. While that isn't what I would have guessed , there it is.(P.145).
If anything in this raises questions, good! I may not know the answer but someone else might.

Thanks for all that information.
Food for thought! What is the thought about clips in the boot toolbox vs felt lining
