Drive it Day - Sunday 26 April / Why does it happen ??

Post by Chris C » Wed Apr 01, 2015 8:46 am

Every year "Drive It Day" is purposefully held on the Sunday nearest to 23 April. Why?

Because it commemorates the 64 cars that left London on the first day of the Thousand Mile Trial on 23 April 1900.
The Royal Automobile Club Thousand Mile Trial started in London and passed through Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester
- travelled through Scotland - then passed back through more English locations until they were back in London again.
The tour lasted until May 12th and 46 out of approximately 65 starting cars made it to the finish line.

So, don't forget to check out your local area for Drive it Day Events on Sunday 26 April. If you belong to a local Rover
Owners Club / Noggin 'n Natter Group, then arrange to have a "drive out" to a local attraction. For example, it's the
Leyland Princess's 40th Birthday and they are having a meet at the Mini Factory in Cowley, Oxford from 10am till 4pm,
all are welcome and light refreshments are available. http://www.leylandprincess.co.uk/leylan ... _index.htm

Another Event Bicester Heritage are holding is their 5th "Sunday Brunch Scramble" at the old RAF Station just on the
outskirts of Bicester. You need to pre-register for this event, see http://bicesterheritage.co.uk/events/2166/
So drop the wife / partner / girlfriend off at Bicester Shopping Outlet Village and check out Bicester Heritage.
A number of Drive it Day car runs are either ending up here, or calling in for a quick coffee / tea.

If your Rover Club / Noggin 'n Natter Group manage to get out somewhere on 26 April, then take some pictures
and write a short report, then send it to the Freewheel Editor - Ian Elliott at ielliott@thersr.org

Tell us about any Drive it Days in your area so that other Members can attend. Lets hope for some good weather on the day !

Chris
I posted details of the Bicester event in the 'Meetings, Rallies and Events' section of the forum last month. I'm aiming to have my car up and running in time to attend.
Cheers
