What is " drab " gear oil ?? If it looks like aluminium paint you have the classic P2 P3 gearbox problem , a collapsing lay shaft bearing . Don't wait ., fix it NOW. The P series gear box and back axles use engine oil . Don't use sexy gear oils which contain sulphur based EP additives which chew up bronze gear box components

The oil has lumps of black grease (looks like Molycote) in it, nothing silverish.
I have filled it with 140W (more then 1,5 l went in ) now and it functions well and isn't leaking any oil on the garage floor sofar.
Another problem I had, but have solved now:
Asa the watertemp reached 70 C the engine started running on less then 4 cil and stopped completely after.
This appeared to be be caused by water in the distributor that started condensating on the inside of the cap.
Took some time to find, but after a good clean it's fine now.
Final question for now:
What should I use in the coolingsystem to prevent it from freezing?
One specialist told me to use concentrated stuff that is added to the water, because Coolant will damage gaskets etc, while the other told me "we always put 100%coolant in". (btw, my car has a modern radiator)
The coolant I have on the shelf give protection to -26 C, so I have added about one third of the sys, which should then protect till -9 C, definately enough for inside the garage.

All cooling systems must have some additives to prevent corrosion and scaling if not tp prevent freezing. Any modern antifreeze suitable for cast-iron will be suitable at between 25-50% concentration. If any localised overheating one of the water-wetter additives can be added.
Ready mixed stuff is also OK but standard ethylene glycol based concentrate is chearper I use Comma
