VIN number 1935 Rover 12

Post by kevh » Wed Jun 05, 2019 6:23 pm

After sending the V5 to the DVLA they have replied asking for the VIN number and a photograph showing where it is located on the car. There is a plate in the engine bay but that only shows the vehicle number, will it also have a VIN number and if so does anyone know where it will be?

I have never been asked for this type of information before, is it to do with the cars age, or something more sinister?

There should be a small brass and black plate on the bulkhead under the bonnet. It says something like Rover Car co, the chassis number, which will be 5##### for your car. I think it also says made in 1935 on plate. The chassis number would have been the same as the engine number if the engine is original. The engine number is on the top face of the casting where it bolts to the engine mounting on the off side. Might be thick with paint but should be there.

Can email you pictures of mine if you send me a private message with your e mail address.

Engine number has the same structure as the car number, but they are not necessarily (originally) the same. There is also stamp on the chassis, close to the steering box mount. See also here: https://wp.me/pXLKy-3dP

Thanks.

I have the car number and the chassis number so will send them those, the only difference between the two is a prefix letter on the chassis number.

Apparently to keep the same original registration DVLA have started insisting on photographic evidence to prove the car is still the same as when first registered, which mine is apart from the 6 litre engine and 32 ton trailer, otherwise they will issue the vehicle a new "Q" reg, not sure if this is a new thing or not.

Hi Kev,

Do be careful with numbers, best not confuse DVLA. Rovers of that era did not have VIN numbers but were identified by chassis numbers. The earlier cars had no stampings on the chassis and as supplied, the engine number and chassis number were the same. (Later post 1937/8 cars were stamped with the Chassis number near the steering box and frequently had an engine number that was different to the chassis number).

As Tony said, the chassis number is on a plate screwed to the Bulkhead. There will usually also be a body number (on a brass plate). The body number was stamped on items such as the sunroof so they were matched to the correct body later on the assembly track. The only number known to the DVLA is the Chassis number starting 51....

Please feel free to consult me or Chris Cartmell. Your car has been known to the RSR since 1977 and the first owner who joined in '77 had owned it since 1969.

Thanks for the information.

The plate screwed to the bulkhead states "car number 51....", is this the number I should give to the DVLA?

I wouldn't want to give them anything which may lead to any confusion as you know what they are like, give them half a reason and before you know it you have the spanish inquisition!

Kev,

Yes, six digit number starting with a 5 for 1935. The plate should say 1935 model above the number.

Have you posted off the v5? Surely the chassis number is on that and known to DVLA? Also, if you have a copy of it or one of the old buff or green log books, you will have the chassis (or car) number for reference to check that you have identified the correct plate on the car. Just a thought.

Good luck. As Mike says, any issue and as the car is known to the club already, he can probably help convince the DVLA.

Tony,

I located the number on the bulkhead and the one on the engine, they are both the same and the same number as shown on the original green log book, starting with a 5 as you say.

So I will send them this information together with a couple of photographs and hopefully they will be satisfied and all will be ok.

Hi Kev,

Do not post the VE 60-(fold out logbook) to DVLA as original documents have a high chance of getting lost in the works. If they insist on seeing it we can certify a photocopy that is acceptable in these circumstances. Please keep me posted

Best regards
Mike
