WANTED 1937 Fourteen steering parts

Post by TheBigE300 » Sun Apr 12, 2020 5:25 pm

Hi, been trying to sort my steering for a while now and I'm convinced the three steering arms are incorrect.

Bit of a long shot, I’m looking for these arms.
1937 fourteen (chassis 723246)
Numbers are from my parts list 1934 - 38

Drop arm Rover No. 40464
Track rod lever Rover No. 41336. O/S
Track rod lever Rover No. 41340. N/S
Forgot to mention, the drop arm only fits the '35 to '38 fourteen saloon
But the track rod levers fit the '34 to '38 10, 12 & 14
The numbers on my arms are nothing like.

Hi Eric

The track rod levers 41336 & 41340 are used on the 12hp up to 1946 according to the 39-47 parts list. I've just had a look at a pair of 1947 arrms (212517 & 212518) - the left is marked 212518S but the right is marked something like 5030. So I'm not sure that absence of the finished part number necessarily means the part is wrong. I may have a pair of 1946 arms somewhere - I'll see how they're marked if I find them.

Best of luck anyway, Dave M

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the heads up re the 39 - 47 parts list, I've got the 34 - 38 list.
It shows the track rod levers are the same (41340 & 41336) on the 34 - 38. 10, 12 & 14 So these arms were used a lot.
The numbers on mine are (65679 & 65680) I have no idea where they came from, much higher numbers! I feel somebody back in the day may have replaced the whole axle rather than doing the king pins, knuckles etc. but then again I could well be wrong!
Then with the steering drop arm, the number on mine is 2R/9M/2 B. should be 40464. although I have been told the numbers could be casting reference numbers.
I do have drawings with measurements of my arms if you feel they might help.

The reason I'm trying to locate these parts is that lock to lock the steering wheel does less than two and a half revolutions but with the drop arm removed I get three full revolutions. I'm sure that arms of the correct length will give me the full three revolutions and lower the gearing making the steering less heavy when driving.

I'm positive the steering box is correct for my car (although it was a replacement a few years back before I got the car) so it must be the arms.

Thanks again and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Stay safe
Eric

Interesting - I've got a 1946 12s (I think) drop arm (40461) which is marked 2R/2M with III under the M, so similar to yours and perhaps refering to an earlier stage of manufacture as you say. I assume the different part numbers for 1947 track rod levers are due to the revised oiling system rather than changes to steering geometry. If you could send me dimensions I can do a comparison. I suppose there's no telling what previous owners have done over the years - maybe someone got a likely-looking axle from a scrapyard and fitted it on. As I said earlier I might have some earlier arms in my lock-up - it's about 15mins walk away so I'll wait until the rain stops before going round there - count it as my permitted daily exercise!

Cheers, Dave

My book only goes up to 1938
That number 40461, by my book, is for 39, 37, 38. 10 and 12
My drop arm 40464 fits the 35 - 38 14 saloon and the 37 - 38 12 sports saloon.
Also if my drop arm had a bend downwards it would help with interference to the O/S spring.
Hope the pics make sense.

It got out sunny so I've been to the garage. Found a pair of stub-axle assemblies complete with hubs so my arms have grown a bit - should have taken paper, pencil and wirebrush with me! Anyway, interesting results - the left is marked 212518, has the external oil feed pipe from the king-pin and blank bosses where the meter valves fit on the 1947 version. The right is marked 5030 like the 47 one but no blank boss, just the external pipe. Dimensions look pretty much the same as your diagram. I'll have a go at removing them from the stub axles and measure them more accurately.

There's no urgency at all on this, I'll not be going anywhere soon in this present climate.
The numbers on your parts mean nothing to me, so many differences. I've been trying to sort this steering for quite a while now and my thoughts are that if the two arms were a different length, I think slightly shorter, and the drop arm shorter still by twice that amount with an offset downwards all would be good. Can't really explain it clearly enough, that's why I really want the parts with the correct numbers, if they exist?

Hi Dave
A better pic showing measurements on my steering arms, didn't realise some measurements were obscured. Also all the holes for the steering joins are in the same direction ie they all sit on the top of the arms. There is a front axle from a '46. 10 on eBay showing the arms with connecting rod fixed below the arms and the drag link sitting on the top, which I'm sure would help a lot with some of the fouling of the springs on my car.

Hi Eric

Thanks for the extra pic. I've realised that I won't be able to get the arms off the stub-axles without a press so I've measured them as accurately as possible in situ. Both pairs exactly match your dimensions and the holes are tapered so that the ball joints fit on top. So the arms appear to match even if the numbers don't.

The 10hp axle on ebay is interesting because I would have assumed it was the same as a 12hp. Presumably the drag-link is meant to be curved - the 12 drag-link is straight and attachs behind the track rod and not in front as on this one. It would explain why the track levers, track rod and drag-link all have different part numbers between 10 and12.

All very fascinating in theory but maybe not much help in solving your problem!

Yes my set up is the same as your 12. I'll get there one day.
Thanks for all your help, all these little bits of info I'm collecting will add up to an answer I'm sure. What I really need is to find another one the same as mine for comparison, not had much luck in that department so far.
Thanks again and stay safe.
