1934 Rover 12 Electrics

Post by digcot65 » Tue Feb 16, 2021 1:32 pm

Afternoon can any one tell me what this switch is for .There are three wires going to it and there is a the word ON stamped on the front. I imagine it is an original switch fitted to the car.The wiring of my car is in a bit of a mess ,with new wiring all over the place ,so Id like to get it sorted .I have the headlight wiring done the side lights work, the original trafficators work and the horn now works, but the indicators partly work and the fog light doesn`t work .Its difficult to trace wiring from the dash ,due to it being covered underneath . Fortunately I was an electronics engineer so not as frightened as I could be Len

Forgot to add also what is the knob for, to the left of the switch, marked throttle .The joy of old cars that have been messed with over the years .I switched the ignition on after it not being used for some months ,to check various electrical connections and there was a smell of burning plastic .After checking round smelling everything I found the wiper motor was burning out.One more to add the "things to do "

Does anyone with a 1934-35 Rover 12 have a switch like this on their dashboard. It looks original, but over so many years who knows.Since I haven`t driven the car yet I have no idea what its for.Strange it has three wires with an" ON" position but I cant see any other letters Len

Not a genuine Rover switch as far as I know. The throttle knob is a hand throttle so to start the car from cold you may need to pull the mixture (choke) out and the hand throttle.

Thanks I will have to try and sort where the wires go to .Its awkward due to the underside of the dash being boarded up .Len

Almost finished the electrics ,for some reason the rear indicators didnt work I checked the wiringright up to the engine bay ,but it went behind the dash which I can`t get to so reconnected both left and right wires and all OK .The next thing is to try and find out why the Pass(fog) light doesn`t work .Since my headlights have been altered to both having twin filament bulbs in and the relay removed ,not sure when I am till I start checking the wiring back from the pass lamp though but awkward Len

Ive fitted a new bulb in the pass light .The original one looked perfect ,but my meter wasnt working. It wasnt until I found another meter, and the bulb was O/C .However it still doesnt work,so I`ll have to get to the back of the dash and see if the switch is wired up to the pass light. If not I can run wires to the one headlight,so the pass only works when head is on.If I get that done the basic electrics are working.I am not too sure if it charges ,until I start the engine At least its not boring.Waiting for the headlight shell to be ready at the chromers,I couldnt not have them done,as the radiator cowling has been rechromed and they would have stood out Len

Managed to get to the rear of the dash,to check the pass/ fog light switch as the light isnt working. The switch is faulty and does anyone know how its removed I cant see that it unscrews from the front,as there arnt the usual grooves in the chrome to unscrew it Len

Finally finished the electrics, with all working Lights/horn/indicators and fog light Quite a relief, considering the state they were in .I`m ready to start the engine after the weekend,so be interesting ,to see if the dynamo charges . I never had chance to see ,when I bought it as I was told it was missing on one cyl and I didnt want to risk running it in case it was something serious.I turned out to be ,that some of the head studs were only tightened down to 5 ft/ils instead of 35 this allowed water into the one cyl.Fitted a new head gasket ro be on the safe side ,so keen to hear the engine running Len

Just spent a couple of hours fitting wiring ,for the Fog /Pass light .By law it should have an illuminated switch ,which I bought Finished and checked everything was OK and switched on,nothing so checked through and found the inline fuse I had fitted had blown Checked again fitted new fuse checked the voltages where correct and switched on ,fuse blew again Frustration ,I finally found the new switch was faulty it seems the LED was short circuit,so when switching on with there an earth connection for the LED it was shorting out .So now have to wait for a replacement ,more than likely its another Chinese made part.Len
