Hi All
This may be a "dumb" question but does anyone know what the paint is that's used on the firewall and other areas under the bonnet of the Rover? In my case its a black, ripply looking stuff. I'd like to know whether there is a modern equivalent and whether anyone's had experience of it.
Cheers
Adrian
paint for firewall of P3
Re: paint for firewall of P3
Hi Adrian my P3 is fairly original under the bonnet and the back engine bay baulk head has the ripple effect like a sprayed on under seal, the underside and side panels are a plain sprayed black finish. I have seen a P3 with a smooth finish to the baulk head but this was on a restored car so was most likely done in the restoration. I'm thinking mine is original as the chassis plate is riveted over this finish. Regards Steve
Re: paint for firewall of P3
Hello Adrian,
Mine too is un-restored and has the same mottled, mastic based, under-seal type material applied although being a grey vehicle it has been painted over in more of an 'over-spray' type style. This appears to be a factory finish and not the result of later repairs.
I cannot help in identifying a modern equivalent but would also be interested knowing what it is! We have a body-work specialist at work so I will ask if he is familiar with the application and report back.
With kind regards
Matthew

Thanks Steve and Matthew
Mine sounds similar to your two cars - unrestored. I also see an overspray appearance, particularly near the top of the bulkhear. This may be from an area of overspray after a repair in my case (I'm finding evidence of some damage to the car in a collision at the front). I am wondering whether the wear and tear on the bulkhead paint finish can be "touched up". Mine has lots of pieces of the finish missing, and some bad discolouration (particularly below the brake fluid bottle). I will try and clean the bulkhead (leaving the old finish in place), would like to then patch any gaps somehow and possibly apply a thin coat of black paint of some sort to simulate the old colour. It's a work in progress.

Re: paint for firewall of P3
I've just spent a week chipping this old paint off, both on the firewall and on the interior floor panels. The paint seems to be bitumous in nature, and leaves the panel rather oily after it has been removed. While the paint seemed at first sight to be in reasonable condition, the panels were rusting lightly underneath it (which is why I've removed it). I've wire brushed the panels and put on a thick coat of Watyl Rustkill paint. I'm planning to add a coat of underbody sound deadener paint over the top.
If you are using a wire brush attachment on an angle grinder, I don't recommend letting it get to close to your clothing. Mine grabbed my shorts and removed about six square inches of skin on my backside. That's slowed me down a bit!

Re: paint for firewall of P3
Mine has the same coating on the upper surfaces - presumably for sound deadening/anti-drumming reasons. My solution was to over-paint it with black Smoothrite, which smartens it up no end. Cheers, Matt.
