striker plate adjustment rover 10

Post by MikeB » Wed May 28, 2014 12:14 pm

Hi all

My Rover 10 doors are not a very good fit, I am in the process of ordering some replacement hinge pins and brass balls for all four doors, whilst I am waiting for these to arrive I decided to tackle to front near side door closing problem; I have to slam the door and then lock it from the inside to keep it shut, it's obvious that the lock is not engaging past the first safety latch into the fully closed position my question is; If I can loosen the screws on the striker plate can anybody tell me if there is any adjustment on these to bring it closer to the door lock and has anyone been through door adjustment and alignment process on a 10
Any information would be apprciated

Thanks

Mike

The striker plate is not attached directly to the body, but to a plate inside the body and the bolts are passing through rather big holes, so that it can be moved around to the correct spot and than fixed. It also may have shimes behind it which determine its height above the body, which can be adjusted by adding or removing shimes. But sometimes the issue is the hinges: they may not be properly aligned, or distorted, or the body member to which they are attached is distorted. Fixing it is not a trivial task - although possible. You can get an idea what is involved by looking at the pictures in the following links:

One problem that you may encounter is the rear plates holes have stripped threads, on my '35 10 I had to removed the origina rear plates and make up new, only two screws were holding on one and three on the other.

You may have read about my dilemma with the drivers door springing open with a pot hole encounter on my Coupe..I have now fitted secondary locking system which will prevent the same happening again.

Thanks Chris and Luli

I figured that they must be adjustable, however, even with the screws loose on the one I have tried to adjust I can not get the plate to move yet, there may be something sinister going on behind , looks like its going to be a long job!

Thanks for the help

Finally had time to look at the striker plate adjustment on my rover 10

I could not move the striker plat screws in the front off side door, so I had a look at the rear door to get an idea of how much adjustment there was, the screws could be moved on the rear door plate, however when I unscrewed the screws the plate would not move ? I decided to unscrew them as far as I could and prise the striker plate away from the door jam, it came away but still no adjustment ?

After looking down at the threaded holes behind the plate it can be seen that two of them are elongated and two are not, I removed the outer screws and then the plate could be moved
once adjusted the plate could only be tightened down with the two inner screws in the elongated holes as the outer threaded holes were partially covered with the adjusted plate

This seems a daft idea, does anybody know why they did this?

Regards
Mike

Hi Luli

Yes that's exactly what it is not sure why there would only be adjustment on two holes ?

I don't understand it also, but it had worked for me. However, we had spent a lot of work and effort adjusting the hinges, on the other side of the door. They effect the door alignment. See here: http://wp.me/pXLKy-1bJ
The hinges are matched pairs, numberd, and should be adjusted carefully. In our case one of them was distorted and had to be fixed before the door set properly.

Thanks Luli

This will be one of the many tasks to get the body ready for painting, I have also been looking at the windscreen with a view to removing the glass, chroming the surround and replacing the seals, I have found 4 screws on either side of the windscreen frame which have been there since the was built no doubt, any tips on removing the screens and separating the frames

regards

Mike

This had been discussed many times in the forum. Look for instance here: http://www.rover-forum.thersr.co.uk/vie ... reen#p4871.
You can see some more pictures here: http://wp.me/pXLKy-pR
