Early brakes

Early brakes

Postby classicclara » Mon Jun 24, 2019 4:56 pm

Afternoon, does anyone know if the brakes on the early P4s are the same as what were fitted to the P3s? Someones given me some P4 brake shoes but I don't know if they'd fit. Would any shoes from the early P4s work - and if so which - 60? 75? Thanks in advance.

The part numbers are different P3 to P4 and the Master parts list indicates that P3 brakes fit only P3 and early P4 brakes fit only early P4. What model were the P4 shoes fitted to?

Thanks for the reply - a 75 I believe. That's a shame, I thought perhaps they would fit as I know a lot of the parts did go over from the P3 into the early Land Rover and P4s.
Thanks anyway Mike!

I had all the shoes on my 12 Tourer re lined by a firm called Saftek in Cleckheaton, who specialise in old car brakes and clutches.

They provided a superb service and returned my newly re lined brakes almost by return post. This was back in 2015, but I doubt the cost will have gone up a lot. I paid about £140 for all eight, inc postage and VAT but I recall the price is dependent on the size of the shoes and, I suspect, the difficulty involved. As such, although they gave a guide price, they wouldn’t confirm the cost until they had seen the shoes. Not unreasonable. Your shoes will be larger than mine so expect them to cost a bit more.

Given that new linings will all be non asbestos, I’d suggest it’s better to replace with this type rather than use old ones. Worth mentioning that your car has rod operated brakes to ensure they use appropriate soft lining material.

Hope that helps give you an option for good stopping power!
