By-pass oil filter

Post by 36t46s » Fri Jan 15, 2010 12:24 pm

A recommendation from David Moseley

When rebuilding my 1936 12hp tourer (completed in 2001) I fitted an AC bypass oil filter, but I removed it after 2000 miles as I could not source a replacement. However, the micro-filtration properties of this type of filter are attractive and this year I searched the web for a modern equivalent. I came up with Kleenoil Code 9758 Engine Micro Filter Unit, which consists of a very robust aluminium canister 3" in diameter and 6 1/4" high, holding replaceable paper cartridges (Code 1858).

Image

I decided to mount the Kleenoil filter on the scuttle, held by the bracket supplied, next to the coil. I was advised that the filter would work in any position, specifically that mounting it upside-down would not be a problem. I find that only an eggcupful of oil drains away after use, but to prevent this I have recently fitted a tap.

Image

I fitted a 7" inlet pipe (-04 JIC 20TPI female thread) to the take-off point for the oil pressure gauge on the engine block. The gauge itself now comes off a tee just below the filter.

Image

The return pipe from the bypass filter would normally go into the centre of the rear tappet cover plate, but in my case I had previously drilled and tapped into the block just above the oil filler.

Image

With a bypass system it is crucial that the amount of oil passing through is strictly limited, since there would otherwise be a significant drop in oil pressure. The filter comes with a built-in restrictor and I find that oil pressure is well maintained at 30psi or above, according to Rover specification. In the course of time all oil will in theory be filtered and it should therefore be possible to decrease the frequency of oil changes. I am now planning to carry out an oil change every 2000 miles instead of the recommended 1000 miles, replacing the filter element at the same time.

Looks a very neat mod. David. I've got a Fram F3, but the C3 cartridges are hard to come by, and undoubtedly the Kleenoil unit will be much more efficient. Did they supply the pipes to your spec. or did you source them separately? Connecting the feed to the pressure-gauge outlet is a good idea. Mine is connected to the rocker-shaft oil feed and I have never worked out a way of routing the pipe neatly.

Kleenoil supplied the hoses and T-piece to my specification - as I said Paul Kitching went out of his way to be helpful. The only problem I experienced was that the restrictor in the T-piece was initially below the take-off point for the oil gauge, which made the gauge read rather low. When I drilled out the restrictor and inserted a grub screw restrictor above the take-off point the readings were higher. Paul now agrees that it would be better for the gauge take-off point to be lower, with the restriction above it.

I bought a new remote filter off eBay at a reasonable price and fitted this, there are several types,
they have the modem screw on fitting and most modern cheap filters can be used.
This was a MOCAL unit with 3/4 UNF screw on for £40.
cheers Jeff Lee.

Hi Jeff, I am very interested in your remote oil filter add on, can you add more detail on the fittings and use, are you satisfied with the addition ? Thanks, Chris

I fitted the Mocal filter adapter (eBay no. 121831988033) and ¼" gate valve as restrictor, most screw on filters will fit,
I sourced pipe work and reducers locally.
It was mounted on a strengthened plate on the inner wing ( helmet type) just above the chassis and was almost out of sight,
the pipes ran along the lower bulkhead with flex to the engine T piece fitted to oil gauge and return to cover plate.
I sold the car a few years ago and have no photos. I intend doing this mod. to all my other rovers.
cheers Jeff.
