Thanks for your reference Luli. I have located the blanked off vacuum connection port on the inlet manifold - not shown on the parts list drawing (I have no lube system remaining). Amazing that I had not recognised it before. I tested the compression again with the vent open to check against blockages. The results were about 5 PSI higher across the board except the previously poorest cylinder which was 8 PSI higher. I suspect though that this was because the engine may have been somewhat hotter than when I tested previously. I checked again with the air cleaner removed etc and later with accelerator closed but no change so I am still thinking the piston rings are the suspect.
BTW I have been using Google translation on your webpages and find the results barely comprehensible at times but sometimes amusing. Google Translate is quite reasonable on French and German etc so perhaps it is the Hebrew characters combined with the technical language which causes the gobbledegook. The pages though are a really good archive and should be recommended to anyone starting on a P2.

Cracked it. If you tell Chrome to translate the page it cannot do it but if you go to the options and tell it to 'always translate' and then close the page and open it up again it works.
