1934 Rover 12 Radiator problems

Post by digcot65 » Thu Feb 04, 2021 1:37 pm

Hell, when I bought the Rover, the top rad outlet was covered in filler and a bodge clamp arrangement .Now getting close to starting the engine,it leaks and after stripping it off `I`ve found why Can someone tell me what the small pipe is for which goes from the pipe feeding the rear of the head to the Rad outlet. Is it a bypass, for when the stat is closed.Im going to have to ask an engineering company I know,if they can make a new outlet to replace the corroded one.Typical problems with old car, just when you think its coming together,it falls apart.Hey Ho I could think of other words .I dont suppose there is a million to one chance of finding one of these outlets Len

Len,

I believe Meteor Spares stock these thermostat housings. You are correct that the smaller pipe is the by pass. The tapped hole is for a temperature sender, if a gauge is fitted.

Some tyres of anti freeze used in the 60s and 70s caused major corrosion on these cast alloy parts.

Morning, this is how it was when bought, there was a slight weep from it,but I imagine when hot and under pressure could be quite bad.The other side of the casting, was covered in some sort of filler a real codge up which had to be seen to Len

Fortunately, there was enough thread left when I cut the bolt off after the nut had been welded on .Why it was welded on,no idea .Problem is on an 80+year old car there have been many codge jobe down the line The nits could have been tightened down as normal instead of using the clamp.Len
