Hello on the final leg of the restoration.I bought an electric type temp gauge and since my car is positive earth,I was careful to wire it accordingly ,connecting positive leads to earth and neg. ones to ignition .It lit up for a few seconds and then the light stopped working I shorted the sensor out on the rad, which should have meade the gauge read max temp but nothing . Is the sensor that fits into the radiator polarity sensitive ,can anyone tell me please Len

Hi,

If the gauge doesn’t read when you Earth the sensor wire and, I assume based on your post, the light inside has stopped working then it sounds like either the gauge has stopped working or a fuse has blown.

Just been looking on Agriline Products ( they do tractor parts ) and they have several temperature gauges that appear to be capillary type and reasonably priced. I have a Ferguson TEF 20, which is positive earth so if it will do that it should be ok for your Rover. Gauges may be a bit modern looking for your car but better than one that doesn’t work!

Worth mentioning that Agriline and Anglo-agriparts stock a lot of bits that could be re-purposed for our old cars. Worth scanning through their online parts lists for things like dynamos, voltage regulators, track rod ends and exhaust boxes. Also, they stock Classic oils. Ferguson tractors were made in Coventry from late 40s by Standard so parts are likely to be similar.

Tony.

Thanks for the information .I checked the voltages on the gauge and they were OK so I suppose, that its one of those Chinese reliability problems.Everything seems to be made there, down to a price forget quality Ive managed to source a classic electrical one off Ebay which sorts out the polarity problems . I was wondering, since I had to connect it allowing for mine being positive earth, then would the sensor being screwed into the Rad .which is positive of course Upset the gauge . Just bought a lovely wicker trunk to fit onto the luggage rack since there is no boot on the car Len
