Hello all, I am currently recommissioning my 1947 Rover 14 P2, which has been stationary for 15 years. I am now ready to commence work on the running gear, i.e. suspension, wheels, brakes tyres, my aim it to make the vehicle as useable as possible.
With respect to tyres, I intend to change all the tyres, as the car as been sitting on them, unmoved, for fifteen years and I am investigating changing to radials, to improve handling / safety etc. I viewed previous posts from 2018/2021. I would appreciate the views of others with regards to their experiences of changing over to radials on the 14/P2 and if any particular tyres are recommended. I would like to, as far as possible like to retain the profile of the car.
Also I would like to upgrade the performance of the Girling rod brake system by using the best of "modern" materials for the brake linings and would appreciate any recommendations please.
Thanks for the help and regards
Dave
1947 14 P2 Tyres and brakes question
Re: 1947 14 P2 Tyres and brakes question
You may find it difficult to source modern Radials...the profile (height) can be a challenge! I mistakenly bought what turned out to be emergency spare tyres! The wheel dia & ratio were ok, but of course they were completely useless! Speed restricted and awful tread pattern! Don't go there! Fortunately the supplier was understanding & I returned them for a refund! I think the saga is on here somewhere!
One of my cars has Excelsior cross plies (North Hants) the other has Avons from Vintage Tyres, Both are ok.. I think the Avons are slightly better.
Do remember to fit new inner tubes.& the protective rim well strip.
Both makes of new tyres absolutely transform the handling...much less tramlining and a hugely improved ride
I'm very happy with my brakes & have no idea what the lining materials are! Just make sure the drums are true & the shoes match the drums.
