I have a 1935 10. The air filter has seen better days having removed the lid it consists of what was a felt cone rivoted to the lid this is sorounded by some copper wire woven wool supported by a square steel mesh ring. It has been suggested this arrangement was modified by a previous owner however it has been in my family since the 60s so it seems unlickley. Can anyone confirm that the filter media arrangement is correct? The aluminium part that fits over the carb does not have two bolts holding it down just has a felt seal others I have seen have two bolts. Burlen fuel systems SU catalogue sugests this is a Smiths air filter. The felt was unrivoted so has too big a hole in it and the copper wool is largely disintergrated. Does anyone know a supplier of new felt it has a hessian net backing? Would un-rubber backed sound deadening felt do although I am concerned it may fall apart? Also does anyone know where the copper wire wool can be sourced,I have found material used for jewlery crafts but it looks to fine?
From the picture of the engine in the handbook there is a turret on the inlet manifold next to the conection for the chassis lubrication hose but on my car it has being blanked off. What is the purpose of this part and does it let any air into the inlet manifold?
Any help would be greatly appriciated.

Re: 1935 10 Air filter
I have a 1935 (1936 model) 12hp sports saloon. The carburettor air cleaner/silencer is supposed to be identical on the 10 and 12 saloons for 1935/36 (part no. 01270 in the parts catalogue) and on my car it is a conventional Smiths oil-wetted gauze device which clamps (none too tightly) to the carburettor with a steel band with a nut and bolt.
I suggest the original use of the extra nipple on the inlet manifold was for the Startix device, to prevent it trying to re-start the engine when there was manifold depression because the engine was still running. My car has the boss cast in the manifold, but not tapped, and has a Startix box used simply as a starter solenoid. There is no Startix position on the ignition switch, so I can only assume that Lucas wanted to get rid of Startix boxes cheaply when the system became discredited.

Thanks for the response, I am begining to think it has been modified ori s not the correct smiths oil wetted gauze type.
If it is a smiths oil wetted gauze filter, how is the gauze installed, attached and were can I get some? Google seams unable to find me some.

Re: 1935 10 Air filter
Hello, I may be able to help with your query over the 1935 10 Filter. The original filter did NOT have the two screws at the side for fixing, this was from 1936 cars . It was considered to be an improvement as the 1935 10's only pushed on without any clamping, just as in the manual, and I would have imagined that it was not very stable and hence the 1936 ' improvement '.
I have tried to source the 1935 type , but have been unlucky so far, maybe they were all discarded for the later type. My two 1935 10's both have the 1936 type fitted. The barn find I have just aquired also had the '36 type fitted. I have improvised a filter by using wire mesh ( similar as fitted to old radios ) I sourced at B&Q and modern filter material, similar to felt that I found that was used for lawn mowers, and wired them together...not sure how efficient..but better than nowt !!! I would be interested to know the details of your ' 10 ' I did try to catalogue every one still in existance, only 1935 models, I got to 10....are you no. 11 ? Chris Dancey c.dancey07@ntlworld.com

Re: 1935 10 Air filter
I have just checked the inlet manifolds on my two ' 10 ' s and there is no sign of a turret next to the luvax take-off, so probably a later one.
