Gerbox gremlin

Post by MikeB » Mon Feb 09, 2015 5:13 pm

On another post I solved my clutch issue now I find I have a gearbox issue to solve also, both are related;

Having removed the engine and replaced the clutch friction plate with a slightly thicker one I had to add some packing to the clutch operating lever to gain some more travel, this worked well, however having now got around this, I now find that I cannot select any gears, I can see the arms pushing the friction plate away from the fly wheel and it is traveling far enough to do so, however I cannot select any gear except third

Looking in the manual it states that the remote control on the gearbox may not be set up correctly, having had this part off and also moving the car in the garage a few feet with it off but with the gearbox supported I am wondering if I have inadvertently moved something out of place in the box ?

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Mike

Most probably that the selector arm is not where it should be. You can find a picture of the selection gate here:

Make sure that in neutral the slector arm is in the center of the middle selector, and as you move the gear change lever from left to right in neutral it always stays inside the selectors.
See also here: http://wp.me/pXLKy-kN , it will help you see the "degrees of freedom".

Thanks Luli

I will be studying the gearbox and your reply to understand what needs to be done, it looks like I will have to remove the box to see what is happening, hopefully it will be straight forward to correct it

I will post my findings as soon as I have a solution

Regards

Mike

Hi Mike,
I don't think you need to remove the gearbox. Remove the carpet and cover that enclose it. Remove the two screws of the gate cover (No 66 in the attached picture)

Most probably you will find that the selector arm is out of the selectors. Remove the selector arm (5/16 BSF box), and with a long screw driver return all 3 selcors into neutral (central position). Put back the selector arm and proceed as in my above post. Check again and again that when you engage the gears the selector arm does not jump out of the selectors. There are enough degrees of freedom to ensure that.

Hi Mike,
If you take the tin plate off top of gearbox (held by 2 countersunk studs) you will see the gearstick operating finger which moves the 3 shafts for gear selection.
this is a common problem due to rubber under gearbox becoming perished. it is usually easily solved by adjusting with shims under the 4 gearstick mounting studs.
In my car it was found to have three pieces of Woodbine packet under the back studs to lower the finger deeper into slot.
I have since adjusted with steel shims.
Regards Jeff.

Bingo !!

That's exactly what is was, I took off the inspection plate and found the one of the selectors was out of the neutral position, one mirror, one screw driver and a torch and a lot of fiddling as things appeared backwards and I managed to line them up again, I am glad I asked for advice first, other wise could have gone down the wrong road

Top people ! thanks for the help much appreciated, now on to the wiring
