What do set plugs and points at, done the as per workshop manual and it runs awful.

Why do you suspect that the points are responsible for the awful running? are they new? have you measured the voltage drop on them when they are closed? the voltage drop on the coil primary when the points are closed?

If you have put on a new set of points it is worth while giving the faces a roughing up with some emery. The points can have a coating on them and the spark across is not too great, this happened to me once?
