A new member of the Rover community

Hi all
Well, after many years of dilly-dallying I have bought a pre-war Rover. It's a 16 Sports Saloon that I have imported from Norway. Still waiting for DVLA to give me a Registration number, but I'm sure that's only days away.
Picking it up and towing it back was pretty interesting, but now it's here I'm over the moon. I mean, seriously, what a beautiful car!
Hope to see a few of you at meets next year.

Welcome Bob, I'm sure we would all like to see some photos of your car and maybe a few more details, like what year? Look forward to meeting up with you before too long. :)

Well, just drove it back from Bristiol to my home in Teddington.

Good news - it made it! Bad news - a nasty, low-pitched vibration at higher revs; rumbles right through the car. Nasty oil leak too.

Anybody have any ideas what might be causing the vibration?

Also, does anyone know of a good garage close to West London where I can get any problems sorted out?

I'm no expert but if the rumble is there when you are driving and not there if you rev it when stationary then I would suspect prop shaft joints. When you get the rumble have you tried dipping the clutch (or take your foot off the gas when using Freewheel) and letting the revs die down? That might help to narrow it down to engine or transmission. Cannot help with London garage I'm afraid, not somewhere I go very often.

It's a weird one.
Perfectly smooth driving up to about 25mph, then very unpleasant rumble/vibration comes in very suddenly.
Goes away when the clutch is dipped or it freewheels, and the revs are allowed to drop, but remains if the engine is kept spinning.
I think it's there when the engine is revved in neutral too - but doesn't seem nearly as bad.
Could it just be a bad misfire I wonder? But then the power would drop...
Quite curious.

OK Bob, well you seem to have eliminated transmission problems then. Without hearing it I wouldn't like to hazard a guess, maybe someone with more knowledge than me (which would not be hard) might be able to give you a few pointers. Best of luck.

I would suspect a loose flywheel or clutch, that put the crankshaft out of balance and therefor "resonate". There are inspection windows for both - have a look.

That might be the answer, and would possibly explain why it happened so quickly.
Thanks to both of you for your help.
On the bright side, the car drives really well, tracks straight, stops properly and is really very much more 'modern' than I expected. Rover's are a class act!
