I have 2 queries I would appreciate some help with.
Firstly-Threading the Freewheel cable through the gearbox- the first time I tried this the cable went though the gearbox with no problem. However I believe in my ignorance I overtightened the cable with the result that the outer sheath seems to have been drawn into the gearbox and unravelled when I started up. I managed to pull this out in one piece and hopefully no damage. I now think there should possibly have been a different ferrule on the cable outer to stop this happening - is that correct and where could I get one? However currently I cannot even get the replacement cable to go right through the gearbox - it seems to hit an immovable wall about where it should pass into the freewheel unit. I can get a small rigid rod in from the opposite direction and right through but the cable refuses. Any helpful tips?
The other issue is trying to reduce the noise from the differential. I have used some heavier oil (140 SAE) without discernible improvement. I see from the manual that various adjustments are available when you re-assemble the diff but are there any adjustments/improvements possible without removing or dismantling the diff, which seems a demanding operation beyond my skills?

If the cable is straight and there are no loose strands - it should go without an obstacle. You can remove the oil retaining plate (H45 in the parts list) to ease getting it through. Find more information and pictures here http://wp.me/pXLKy-1mm and here http://wp.me/pXLKy-ZG.
Unfortunately, the differential unit has to be removed from the car for service.

Sorry I missed your original post luli, yes sometimes it is easier removing the gearbox plate to refit the cable but with some patience you should be able to feed the end through without removing the plate.

Once the rear differential starts whining the only solution is to strip down and repair or replace

Looking at Plate P in the parts list it seems to show a ferrule of some kind on the grearbox end of the outer casing of the freewheel cable. I think mine is missing. Is this a standard part which I can find or is it integral to the cable sheath?
Sounds like I will have to bite the bullet on the rear diff and get someone to overhaul it. I understand the significant parts are mostly not available. Is there an exchange refurbishment option anywhere ? Or do you know any suitable mechanics down here in the far south west?

According to the spare parts list the distance piece 50576 had been used only on 1947 models. It can be replaced satisfactorily by some small disks. Regarding the differential consult Mike Couldry, Mike Evans or Freddy Boulton - they may have spares or an exchange unit. Also consider replacing it with a smaller ratio p3/Landrover/P4 unit. Thanks again for replying. The ferrule I was seeking info about is on the wound casing to the cable as it enters the front of the gearbox not the clamp and spacer piece to secure it where it emerges from the freewheel unit.

What you are referring to is probably item 58 of plate F in the parts list (ferrule for free wheel operation, part number 55863). It has a thread and it can be removed and fixed, although doing it with the gearbox in situ might be tricky. You can see some helpful pictures here: http://wp.me/pXLKy-1Px

If your car is post war you could easily fit a P4 diff. there's a pair of 4.3-1 on eBay now.
