Just about to have a go at the tappet clearance on my 14. Never used a set of feeler gauges in my life! Two questions;
1. I know (from my excellent new workshop manual) that it should be done when the engine is hot but that's not possible. Is it OK to do it from cold and then redo it when I am able to get the engine started and up to temperature?
2. How do I find out if my engine is group 1 or group 2? Manual mentions black and red plate on the rocker cover. I can't see any plate on mine.

A few pointers, have you done work on the engine? how is the compression, as you have never done tappets before do you know the process, valve clearances vary from .005-.010 hot but no harm in seeing what they are cold it will see if there is a variation. If the engine is standard I personally give the clearances about .002 more clearance to protect from the affects of unleaded fuel. Any more questions?

1. Yes, you can do a preliminary adjustment when the engine is cold. Some advice: Use the starting handle to turn the engine. Removing the spark plugs will considerably ease that operation. 2. If the dynamo is driven by a belt, then it is a group 2 14.

Just another note, when adjusting valve clearances hot or cold use the rule of nine IE when no 1 exahust valve is open you adjust exhaust valve number eight

And the same for the rest, two open adjust seven etc.

Correct, Rule of 9 is only for 4 cyl engine, you use Rule of 13 for 6 cyl engine:

The “Rule of 13″ is a way to know which valve to adjust on a 6 cylinder engine.
If 1 and 3 are open, 1 + 12 = 13 and 3 + 10 = 13. Thus 12 and 10 are the valves to adjust.

39 14 hp has a group 2 engine, so tappets should be set to 10 thou hot.
