Try using some sort of inclined plane. Worked for me. Image

Thanks Tony for your encouragement and tips. I see what you mean about removing/reinstalling engine and gearbox together, I will have to take the box out at some point to replace the pad for the support bracket, as it feels a bit spongy, so may try to put everything back in one piece. Managed to get the block into the house today using a four-wheeled hand trolley, with the sump sitting in an old tyre to keep everything stable.
Luli, we did indeed make a ramp using some scaffolding boards to get it through the front door, though fortunately the incline wasn't as steep as in your illustration
