I have sourced a second hand reserve pipe/solenoid. I will wire it up & fit it in due course! Meanwhile the sender has stopped working (oil level one is ok ). I suspect the bodged float as the Ohm range is ~8(empty) to 85(full) and it bubbled merrily when immersed in hot water! Now checking dimensions of plastic replacements....

Just looked on the bay of E & 2.25" x1.25" (JLM772) are readily available around £10.00.The original tin one is 3.25" x1.25"...any views on whether it will have enough "float". My gut feel is that it will work and if there is any difference in where it floats it will be minimal & nor worth trying to recalibrate anything. At least the ethanol won't get at it!

A one model car club's spares section (also five letters, also starts with R) sells these floats with a piece of arm as a replacement for the original metal type and they'll have sold quite a few in the past seven years or so. They can be joined to the original arm using a chocolate block electrical connector enabling an element of adjustment to be made. I haven't seen any of the ebay floats with a piece of arm supplied but one could be made quite easily from a cheap metal coat hanger or similar.

Of course, you may find no adjustment is required as it would seem fairly likely that the makers will have made some effort to match the weight fairly closely. I believe the replacement plastic floats supplied for carburettors now match the original brass ones for weight.

Thanks for the suggestions. The plastic float was not really suitable (too small diameter) without modifying the arm. I looked at the R***y alternative, but didn't like the look of it (& did not appear to be easy to buy) I have a kind friend who is very capable (30/98's & stuff!) and he will solder it up for me!
