I recall that the late Basil Brown had modified his air filter on a 1947 16, basically the same filter as the P3, by removing the domed top (whether by cutting or prising the rim apart I don't know). He then replaced the very rusty metal gauze, and resecured the top with a domed head bolt or setscrew.
He would have had to contrive a nut to fasten the screw into, but the net result was an air cleaner gauze that could be removed, cleaned, lightly oiled. and replaced.
I thought that he reported this approach in Freewheel, but the index contains no reference to it. Does anyone else remember this rather Heath-Robinson mod?
Hope this helps

Carb problems again
Re: Carb problems again
So lets get up to date on this on going carb problem. I sat in the kitchen today with the carb in all its component parts laid out before me (dont worry all the glass beads are there) now I dont know if any one knows but are the two sets of diaphragms in the accelerator pump differant as when I got the kit a few years back all the diaphragms were the same (there's two inner and two outer ones) but I suspect that the inner ones should be differant from the outer ones as they dont seem to cover all the "air/fuel holes" in the two parts of the body thus allowing fuel to leak (let me know anyone if you know if this is the case) any way I had an idea and decided to block off the accelerator pump all together just to see what would happen as I reckon that having the slightly larger emulsion tubes from the V8 pilot carb might off set the lack of pump and might even bring the mpg figure up, if a bit of flat spotting was the pay off I could live with that and she's never pushed hard now anyway (well not often) so for now using a thick gasket paper I've cut a new gasket to go between the accelerator pump and the carb but with out the holes for the fuel to run back and forth, if this works I will maybe make a blanking plate to go between the accelerator pump and the carb as the gasket alone will no doubt become porous in time. Any way it was all put back together and refitted and after letting the system pressure up I started her up. She started ok and after letting her warm up and tweeking the tick over gave it a try, bliping the throttle seemed ok and the engine responded quick enough but the real acid test would be on the road with the cars waight to contend with so taking her out on to a near by bit of straight road I gave it a try. Well she went like a race horse with no flat spot at all which has lead me to think that the accelerator pump hadnt been doing its job for a long time and in fact was as well as leaking was just bleeding unneeded fuel into the carb leading to the high mpg figure I was getting and that the slightly oversize emulsion tubes have compansated for the accelerator pump being blanked off. Ok so its a bodge but it gets her back on the road and although Ive only run it for a few miles today it feels like its running a lot cleaner already (the exhaust already looks cleaner and smells less rich) so time will tell. I'll keep you up dated on what happens over the next few months, Regards all Steve

Re: Carb problems again
Thanks for the update Steve. Sounds like you may be making progress, so I hope it continues to run OK with this modifcation.

Hi Everyone
I lnow that some P3 owners in the Rover club here in Melbourne have cut the end of their filter which allows them to replace the insides with a Renault filter. I am still running the origional but it is something we will be changing before to long.
