I was under the impression all diffs from P2, P3, P4, P5 and Land Rover were the same except for the ratio so parts were the same so it shouldn't be difficult to find seals

Is it the pinion seal that is required?

I was going to ask Mike Evans as mine is leaking too, I've just not got round to it yet.

Often it is not enough to replace the seal, but you must also replace the collar. This is the right time to change the bearing too: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-SE ... 33a2e3f2e1

If it's the half shaft oil seal that's leaking check the level of the oil in the diff first and also check the breather isn't blocked. I thought I had a leaking seal only to find the oil level was a fraction too high and the breather was blocked so when the oil heated up it had to expand somewhere and the seal being the weakest link is where it came out of. Cleaned the breather and dropped the level a fraction and never had a problem again.

I have a seal here if anyone requires one

Question, are you taliking about the pinion oil seal at the front of the differential, where the flange on the pinion connects to the prop shaft, or the half shaft oil seals at the road wheel ends of the axle?

The pinion oil seal is part 236417 that supersedes to FRC1780, which is available from Landrover suppliers as it is also the oil seal for both front and rear gearbox output shafts.

The half shaft oil seal (54 in the above diagram) started as part no 05533 for 1937 season P2's although the parts book shows 236923, which is the part number for P3's and Land Rover rear axle halfshafts. Further supercessions are to part number 522287 and then to GHS166. Dimensions of the half shaft seal (according to one source) are:-

Inside Diameter:47.63 mm,1.875 in
Outside Diameter:69.95 mm,2.754 in
Width:12.7 mm,0.5 in

A bearing supplier may be able to supply an oil seal to these dimensions, otherwise try Landrover parts suppliers (236923 is listed by many of them).

Regards

Mike

yes its the pinion seal i need original metal one with leather in it ive looked at them land rover ones but not the same size as mine. my one is
1 5/8" x
2 1/2" x
1/2"
I have order one from a bearing supplier today so should have it next week mine was only seeping some oil and iam not bothered about refurbing the rear axle totally at the moment due to fitting a 2.5 td engine and five speed box so will probably change the diff at a later stage heres a pick of my seal
