P3 75 carburetor
P3 75 carburetor
I have a solex 30 paai carburetor that's on my rover p3. I hear mention of people having a solex 30 paai 2 carb on there's. Is there a difference? I haven't been able to find any good photos of the stock carb. Mine looks just like one on a Mercedes 220. Trying to establish what rebuild kit that's needed. Thank you for your help.
Re: P3 75 carburetor
Here is a picture of the carburetor.
Re: P3 75 carburetor
Have you looked on the Burlen website ( they also do SU...I think their SU website will link to their Solex pages)
https://burlen.co.uk/?___store=default
The P3 60 had an SU
The Solex should have another identifying number stamped, not cast, on the body somewhere I think. (this would identify it as for a particular Rover and not for e.g Mercedes 220.
You may pick up a service kit marked for 30PAA1 in a Solex spares envelope at an autojumble, they made generic kits that fitted several cars using the same carburettor and these included gaskets & O rings etc, but not jets
Hope this helps

Re: P3 75 carburetor
Just picking up on the P3 60 reference, I'm curious about the SU.
Pearsons' book lists a Solex 32PBI-2 for a 1948-49 60. This was also the same basic unit of the 1.6 Land Rover. Although an H4 was fitted to the P4 60, the Burlen SU book doesn't show a listing for the 48/49 models. However, while I'm not sure about the 40s and into the 50s, in the 30s various firms supplied "replacement" carburettors which were far from the firm's original offering, the most unusual I saw many years ago being a Zenith on a 1935ish Rover 10.
The reason the question is particularly interesting is that the downdraught D3 unit was only fitted to a comparatively small range of vehicles _ pre war Rovers, some Wolseleys and the six cylinder MGs using the Wolseley derived engine.. Although the Wolseley 12/48 and 14/60 of 1946 was listed as having the D3 unit, I suspect these were pre war built units and the D3 wasn't shown as being fitted to anything else post war so knowing any more about it all would be interesting.

Re: P3 75 carburetor
K4 is stamped I found another k stamped on the bottom.
Re: P3 75 carburetor
Then looks like a 92 on the left and a 94 on the right. That's all I have stamped on this unit.
Re: P3 75 carburetor
Also found 26-30R-24 on the inner carb
Re: P3 75 carburetor
There is a wealth of good information on the 30 FAI, 30 PAAI and 30FAAI/FFIA in the P2 Workshop manual. This includes extracts from the Solex trade leaflet on tuning, troubleshooting etc.
The P2 Workshop Manual Chart refers also to the P3 60 being fitted with Solex 32PB1-2 #S1491 and the P3 75 with Solex 30PAAI-2.
The 75 Solex has jets etc as follows
Main 97.5
Pilot 60
Pilot Air Bleed 120
Starter Petrol 135
Starter Air 5
Correction 240
Economy 60
Accelerator 65
Choke tube 21 NOTE (this is the part in your picture marked 26-30R-24 ….this may suggest a 24mm not 21mm choke perhaps!) So is your carb the original? No Rovers in the Manual have a 24mm choke!
When I was looking for Solex Jets for my 1947 12hp Burlen did not have any remanufactured ones.
the 30PAAI unit is described as : A much more common unit, which was fitted to a number of cars, several foreign (ugh!), as well as in other forms such as AAPI on Ford V8's.
The 30PAAI was offered apparently as a replacement for the 30FFAI when it became obsolete.
Just to make it even more confusing the Workshop Manual says that Solex (!) sometimes supplied (incorrectly) 30PAAI-2 as a replacement for a P2 16hp although it was actually specified for a P3 75 Their catalogue confused the 16hp rated P3 75 with the earlier 16hp model!
The "other number" that I referred to would have been like an S-891 (14hp 40-47) or S-1491 (P3 60) or whatever, but there is no reference to an S- number in the Workshop Manual for several cars, so perhaps Solex had stopped marking them, or the numbers are lost in the mists of time.
I hope I have copied all the numbers correctly! E & OE as we put on export shipping documents!
