Rocker Box Tappet Plate

Post by chris dancey » Wed Jun 25, 2014 10:32 am

Hi Everyone,

I was recently in conversation with Mike Evans over rocker box tappet plates..to be precise the colours.

From the original tappet plate on Snowdrop and Denzel 1935 models with a tappet adjustment clearance of 0.005" the plate is black ( original plates ).

The plate on the 1938 Coupe is just brass, the colour having been polished off. The plate shows 0.010" and should have been red background ( in my opinion ).

Now here we have the conflicting evidence. The RSR workshop manual ( Page 15. Technical Specifications, Remarks ) shows that the reverse is the case ie. 0.005" ( red plate ) and 0.010" ( black plate )

I have a copy of the ' The Motor Trader ' June 23 1937, service Data No. 17 which describes the following :-

' For 0.005". plate is black, for 0.010".red '

I am of the opinion that the RSR Workshop Manual is incorrect and the two colours have been transposed.

Has anyone else an opinion or evidence to the contrary ?

Of about 40 photos of P2 engines that I have all but one have a red background plate - regardless of the year. The one with the black background is 1939 or later. I also have 5 plates from the years 46 - 47 - they are all red.
