Rover 10hp 1935 Model ' Archive '

Post by chris dancey » Fri Apr 12, 2013 8:37 pm

Good News is that I have been contacted by the owner of a Rover 10 1935 that has been in storage since 1953. The chassis number is 502284 and the registration number BOC 14.

One more to add to my ' Archive '

Hi Chris

Thanks for this info, but fyg I already have a note of this car on the RSR archive database.

When I was the pre 1950 registrar back in 1996 I was contacted by a Mr A. Billington who lived in Llandovery, he was not a member but had owned this Rover 10 for many years, along with about a dozen other classics, and he was wanting to sell most of them and was looking for a valuation of the Rover. As was normal practice when committee members were asked to give a valuation, I told him it was difficult to value without seeing the car and its current condition. It so happened we were visiting our daughter in Bristol in the nearby and I agreed deviate and to pay him a visit on our return journey.

About a month later we eventually find his property and he proudly gives us a tour of the various outbuildings where he kept the cars, most of which from memory were in a bad state and in my opinion would not justify the cost of restoration, but who knows!!

When we eventually came to the Rover it was in a rather dilapidated barn covered with tarpaulins, upon their removal it was evident that the Rover was also in a bad way and partly stripped but he assured me all the bits were somewhere around in various boxes. It was a Black car with remnants of red trim!! and on inspection there was no doubt it could be restored but it would be a major job covering bodywork (quite a bit of rust evident) , chrome work was very bad and rusty, and all the interior trim that I could see inc the seats was in a bad way, plus rebuilding what seemed a seized engine, although he assured me it had turned over until very recently.

In view of its condition I seem to remember putting a valuation on it of £400/£500 basis as is, to which he replied no way the number plate alone (British Oxygen Company) is valued at £2,000 and thats the price I am looking for, on that note we parted company and have heard nothing since about the car until your todays post.

Do you have the name and location of the current owner and the cars current condition, by the way is he joining the RSR??

Kind Regards
Andrew McGovern

Hello Andrew,

It would appear that the car is still in Wales...and could also be in the same barn that you visited. I sold ' Snowdrops ' original petrol tank to the current owner who uses an email address that is not his own ( he mentions that he is not computer literate ).

The condition of the car is poor, but I am to believe that the intention is to restore the car, he has asked me for a list of other items I may have and tips to assist with his restoration. I have asked for photographs and an update on condition. I will of course be in touch as soon as I can gleen any details, its very much early days and of course I will try to recruit him to the RSR and Rover Australia Yahoo Group.

Watch this space...or is it thread ?

The petrol tank was collected by the owner of ' BOC ' s cousin who lives near me in Lewes. He told me that the current owner is Charlie Pinnock who lives in Wales, unfortunately it sounds as though the car may end up in France as that is where Charlie my live from next year. Charlie had to come to Lewes ( near Brighton ) for a family funeral yesturday, his cousin said that Charlie may drop in to my house after...I waited in all day but he did'nt visit. I did ask his cousin for some photos, but did'nt get those either.

Sorry I tried,
