Modern Brake lining material

Post by SMITH1752 » Wed Jul 21, 2021 1:03 pm

I have a 1929 Rover 10/25, Despite major brake system overhaul (rod brakes) new linings, NEW cast Drums all round, the brakes are still very poor, not too bad at speed but at low speed they snatch and shudder to the point that the hand brake comes on !!!!!!. Obviously I have new GREEN linings and they are chamfered but I am of the opinion that the lining material is grippy and is more efficient than Asbestos material of the 1920/30's.
Has anybody else had problems like this, I would like to know and of any cure.
Thanks. Ian

Just a thought, the brake expanders are normally secured to the backplates by 2 studs. On other Rovers the backplate has slots rather than precise holes for the studs so the expander can move slightly. The studs are normally secured by a double spring (Thackerey) washer and castellated nut/ split pin, that is correctly tightened when the Thackerey washer is just compressed not tightened to within an inch of its life!

Could be worth checking?
