Hello from Tangoman

Post by Tangoman » Sat Apr 28, 2012 7:57 pm

After a life of classic motorcycles I've now decided to have a crack at Vintage cars. My first one is a 1936 Rover 14 saloon. It's in nice condition but has issues which I'll get sorted hopefully over the next month. So look forward to some technical questions that may seem obvious to some seasoned campaigners. I've always been a great fan of single cylinder engines and now I'm confronted with six!!!

I believe in riding/driving my vehicles to this end I've already booked the ferry to tour the Rover round France in August. No preasure then!!!!

Hello,

Welcome to the Forum and good luck with your 14. Where did you get it? I'm sure that we will do our best to help, but did you know that the RSR has published parts lists and a workshop manual for your car?

kind regards

Hi Mike

I got it from a member in Warrington, a very nice chap. He bought it from a person that did weddings as a result it looks good but the mechanical bits have had a dose of make do and mend.
It currently has an alternator to run the electrics. The dynamo is still in situe. As a result of this the wiring is appalling.
The auto lube isn't working, it has been half dismantled, so there's tubing hanging loose under the car. I've courted opinion on this and there seems to be mixed views on whether to get it working or replace the system with grease nipples. I'm leaning towards getting it working. I love to keep things original wherever possible.
The engine has good oil pressure and runs without missing a beat. It is a little rattly from the tappets. I'm aware of the rocker spindle problems. The plan is to take the head off, carry out a decoke, lap in the valves, inspect and replace any faulty items.
I don't know if the freewheel device works yet but will be getting it working if it's not.
As far as I can see there's one wheel bearing that needs looking at and the auto lube sorting and it will pass its MOT.

I think the chap I bought it off originaly bought it for its looks and then was confronted with the problems which proved to much.

I'm very lucky in having friends who are very knowledgeable of things ancient and are capable of manufacturing most things mechanical. My son's a good tin basher and his friend a paint sprayer, we share a unit and spend many an evening there. Mini Sport are 300yards from my house and have proved excellent at repairing and restoring the unrepairable.
Also in Longridge Nr Preston (15 miles away)is Bonds garage, Tom Bond who was a school friend is a "real" mechanic, and repairs classics.

The previous owner gave me a manual and I've ordered a parts list from the club.

I just can't wait to get the car on the road.

Boy! I can ramble on a bit
