TWO EXCELSIOR 4.75/5.00 17 Tyres AS NEW for 10hp

I have for sale a pair of virtually new Excelsior cross ply tyres Bought in Germany in June this year. They were an emergency purchase after I had two older tyres suffer punctures within 3 hours! I had them fitted to the Front wheels of my 1947 12hp tourer. They are a width too small for the 12 but they are correct for a 10hp, but they were all I could get hold of! I bought them from a well respected German Vintage tyre specialist (Munich Old Timer Tyres) who sent them to me when I was stranded near Cologne! So all they have travelled is from Cologne to Stratford upon Avon and a few local miles! Something just over 500 miles I am replacing them with Avon 5.0 /5.50 17 so as to be the same as the rears!
The pair (without tubes, as they fit the other tyres) are for sale at £170. This is a saving of around £100 on the equivalent tyres supplied in the UK (even after RSR discount!). The tyres are still fitted to my car, so allow me a few days to have them taken off!
Carriage to you to be discussed!
This size fits quite a few cars, but I am offering them first to RSR members before putting them up elsewhere in the New Year(at a higher price!)

Hi I've just acquired my rover 12 and need to get a full set of tyres.
Would these fit or are they too small?
Where is a good place to get tyres and roughly how much should I pay?

Hi Shaft 1926!
The sizes for the post war cars according to my handbook and the 1939-1947 Parts list are
10 4.75/17
12 5.25/17
14 & 16 & 20 5.50/17
All "Avon Standard"
The wheels (T1382 Easyclean) are all the same. So the rim width is the same on all it appears.
The only reason for the difference in tyre width would probably to be to allow for weight? Certainly the 4.75's on my tourer lightened the steering !
I have used Vintage Tyres at Beaulieu / Bicester. They usually have Avons in stock , and gave me a 10% discount! . North Hants Tyres have Excelsiors & also offer 10% discount. Avon are a bit more expensive than than Excelsior
I don't know what size pre war 12's used, but imagine the P2 were all the same
Hope this helps
David

I have just had a look at the Workshop manual & that tells me that the 4.75 x17 fit tens from 1938 to 1947....the twelves used 4.74 pre 1937, but they were on 18inch wheels!

Very good experience with excelsior 17R550 radials on the tourer. See more here:

I find the Avons very good...The Radials are wildly expensive her I recall from when I was looking at radials
