1934 Rover 12 Now engine running ????
Finally ran the car for the first time a few days ago ,after fitting new ign points and a new capacitor .The car started a treat but I have a blow on the exhaust flange Since the car was now running I could change the polarity over to Neg earth ,making it easier to buy a Dynamator and electronic ign .Re polarised the dynamo and ran the car which ran well for half minute, then stopped and no way would it start .Checked every thing on the ign and since the quite new fuel pump fitted by previous owner wasn`t clicking thought it was OK and the float chamber was full .Any way after running out of ideas I removed top of float chamber and it was empty thought straight away of the points so removed cap and found it was an electronic SU When I checked up with SU I was told they are
polarity conscious so wont work if I reverse the polarity So it is now back to original.Tried it and the engine fired up straight away, but again stopped as it had run out of petrol .However after a lot of checking, the wire feeding the pump is intermittent so another long job,but possibly easier to run a new wire to ignition .The other problem I have is ,that the exhaust flange is leaking tried new gasket with exhaust cement on still leaks.I have a feeling the exhaust manifold flange is not true. One day Il have the car on the road Len

Everything is back to Neg polarity and while I was reverting it,I spent some time tidying the wiring which was a bit of a mess.Whoever had fitted spade terminals to many of the wires, obviously didn`t have a crimping tool.So I fitted new terminals and when I tried the car ,it now shows its giving a healthy charge, so at the moment no need to fit electronic charging or ign.At least not until I have completed the restoration .Ive worked out where to fit the items,to keep it looking original, so a job for the future I`ve also fitted a spare fuse board under the bulkhead cover,so the extras can be fuse protected Photo of the fuse and some multi coloured spaghgetti !!!! Amazing how often spaghetti wiring works! trouble is it fails in the dark when it is raining! Fuses and relays are the way to go as you rewire (and keep a record of how you do it....you will NOT remember! trust me!
You are getting there!
You are getting there!
Re: 1934 Rover 12 Now engine running ????
I thought I had a blow on the manifold exhaust flange ,but when I removed the exhaust its where the pipe joins the flange .Other problem is,that the exhaust has a flexi section in it and every joint on the exhaust system has been welded. So I had to cut through the exhaust pipe to remove it,so it can be welded.Ive also found the flexi pipe fits over a 43mm dia pipe and I cant find anyone who sells that size i ,so more searching One day Ill have it on the road,by which time petrol will be banned Len

Re: 1934 Rover 12 Now engine running ????
Took the exhaust flange section to be repaired ,but when it was ground down, someone had brazed it which meant all the brazing had to be removed, before it could be welded So I decided to have a new flange plate made and a new downpipe also it has been repaired a couple of inches down from the flange So may as well get it right while I`m working on it
Re: 1934 Rover 12 Now engine running ????
All the electrics are finished andfused , as I said ,it has started to charge as it should .Now waiting for the exhaust flange to be made, closer and closer as each day passes.Len

Good progress being made, well done
Re: 1934 Rover 12 Now engine running ????
In my search for flexi exhaust pipes,I found a company not too far from where I live. It`s called Every Exhaust Part ,they are in Redditch Worc at
B97 4SP manufacturer of exhaust parts ,Flexi pipes downpipes ,silencers tube joints. So ,if your`e in trouble sourcing an exhaust part, these are the people, they are very helpful as well Len

I`ve had a new flange and Flexi.downpipe made,at the firm I mentioned .Somewhat of an improvement,I found the original flexi down pipe had a split in it as well as there being a bad leak on the flange. So hopefully should be quieter

Re: 1934 Rover 12 Now engine running ????
Sounds like you’re almost there! For the exhaust flange, if the gasket and cement didn’t seal it, the flange might be warped. I’ve had success with metal gaskets or even getting the flange resurfaced. As for the fuel pump issue, running a new wire is probably the way to go. I had a similar problem with an old car of mine and it made a huge difference.
