Rover P2 12 gearbox

Post by hguss » Fri May 23, 2025 7:13 pm

Hello to all

For several weeks I own a P2 12 tourer (R 725 0172). Now I try to bring it back on the road and started to do some repairs. As the gearbox was very noisy even when no gear was selected and the clutch released, I took the gearbox out and dismantled it. It looks as if I have to change some of the bearings. Unfortunately, the gearbox looks different to the drawings in the part book and therefore I am not sure, which part numbers the bearings have. I have added some photos, maybe somebody can identify that gearbox. The bearing of the primary pinion is fixed only by two screws with a washer.
Thank you

That looks like a pre-war gearbox to me. Does it have double-helical gears?

Yes, it has double-helical gears.

That’s certainly pre-war. The drawings in the 39/47 parts list are of the 1947 gearbox and freewheel unit. The RSR workshop manual gives details of the differences between the various versions of gearbox.

Thank you, found a drawing in the RSR workshop manual. Unfortunately I have "only" the 1947/48 part book. Can anybody give my the part numbers of the five bearings resp. does anybody knew the code for them?

Some of the bearings are the same -
Primary pinion bearing (G3), Rover 55714, SKF RLS12
Spigot bearing (G37), Rover 06397
Layshaft bearing (G15), Rover 55715, SKF CFL7
These parts remained in use on later Rover cars and Land Rovers until at least the 1960s, so are readily available.

These are not the same as later gearboxes -
Main shaft rear bearing (G38), Rover 55713, SKF RLS11
Layshaft front bearing (G14), Rover 1642, SKF CFL6

Hope that helps!!
