New Member - Rover 10 Front Springs

Post by andymyers » Tue Dec 02, 2014 9:53 pm

Hello to all
We have just joined the Register tonight. We are Andy and Denise Myers from Lincoln, UK.
We are currently restoring a 1946 Rover 10 six light salon.
We bought the car in boxes and are struggling to restore and re-assemble it due to parts missing and wrong parts supplied.
We are having particular problems with the front springs which seem to be too long (approximately 2") and the front axel appears to be too far forward. Does anyone have the measurements for the correct front springs and/or know of the whereabouts of any for sale?
We're looking for someone with the same (or similar) vehicle anywhere near us so we can have a look, take some measurements and compare.
Thank you all and have a good evening.
Kind regards
Andy

Hi Andy and welcome, I have some springs in my basement from what I believe was a 16hp car, but without checking my parts list I cannot say whether they are the same as what was fitted to the 10hp car, so I will check later today and get back to you

Welcome to the RSR Forum, when you get your Membership Pack, it will also include
a copy of the Members Yearbook, which lists all current members and their vehicles.
It is arranged both alphabetically and by county / postcode. We are a friendly bunch,
so I'm sure that someone will be willing to help you. If you look on the RSR homepage
and select the Members dropdown button, you will see RSR Club Spares, which are kept
near Warwick / B'ham. We may be able to help you with any missing parts. The list is not
currently up to date, so don't worry if the item you need is not listed.
My understanding is that all P2 (10,12,14,16) front springs and hangers are the same part nos. (L&R).
I'm sure that if you have not got a P2 Parts Book, you would find one very useful in rebuilding your car,
as it has very good exploded views of the various areas of the car. Parts List Books are available,
P2 Workshop Manuals are currently out of print, but should soon be available.

Just done a quick measurement of the springs in my basement and they come out at roughly 83cm for the short springs which I suspect will be front and 103cm for what I suspect to be the rear springs

Actually, springs do vary from year to year and model to model.
Luli's information covers the setting dimensions for all P2 Springs. In addition, the bolt holding the leaves together is NOT at the centre of front springs.

The main leaf roll end on a genuine Rover spring should have two holes just visible where the roll meets the leaf at one end, and this the front end. This is designed to allow oil to be driven by the slipstream back over the spring from the Luvax lubrication of the front bush. If the holes are not there then the spring may be a pattern unit.

The thick end of the wedge between axle and spring faces front.

The axle mounting locating bolt on the spring is off centre of the spring, shorter length to the front.

The spring should slide easily into its shackles, If you have to force it, it may be fitted to the wrong side.

Best regards

Mike
